First Look: The Book Cabin

What’s better than a book store? A book cabin. There’s something special about browsing books in person vs. on Amazon, but browsing in a cabin is even cozier than it sounds. We’re sharing a first look at the newly opened The Book Cabin just north of Lake George Village, along with owner Stephanie Jalowiec’s top picks for summer reading…

Tell us a bit about yourself, Stephanie!

I have been “selling books” for the last 23 years as a public school teacher in Connecticut. Most recently, I've been a Literacy Consultant working with kindergarten through fifth grade. I LOVE my day job! Helping students access the world of books and discover that every person can be an avid reader and writer is important to me.

I come from a family of voracious readers - we even have a Cape Cod vacation reading club! As a small child, my mom would regularly take us to the library and then as we got older, we'd visit Walden Books in my hometown. I can still see their shelf of Sweet Valley High books.

My husband Jim and I met in 1998 - he was working at Lee Partyka Chevrolet and sold me my used Pontiac Sunfire. On our second date, he tried to talk to me about Ernest Hemingway and I couldn't stop laughing. Neither one of us remember reading any Hemingway in high school. He was trying to pretend he liked to read, too, and it was the first author that popped into his head.

We have two amazing children - Nathan (16) and Addison (12) who sometimes like to read. It's all about the right book!

What inspired you to open a bookstore?

My husband and I first came to Lake George in 1998 and instantly fell in love with all the area offers. We knew we would want to eventually work and live here.  At first we started with a small cabin in the shadow of Mount Crane for weekends and summers and about five years ago, built a home in the Town of Lake George. We are eager to make Lake George our permanent home.

During the pandemic lockdown, we kept walking past the Trinity Rock Motel property that was for sale. We were pulled towards the idea of creating a more permanent way to live in Lake George. Our children are well settled into their Connecticut lives so we know moving here full time won't be for a few more years. Jim and I always like to play the game of - what else do you want to be when you grow up? The only answer I ever have to that question is a bookstore owner.

The pandemic left me a lot of time to dream. Could I really be brave and open a small retail business?  We all know many businesses in the LG area come and go. Will I have what it takes to become a community anchor? Does the area have enough readers to sustain a small shop?

In April of 2020, I was reading the book Untamed by Glennon Doyle and she reminded readers to be brave and do hard things.  Just because when I was 21 and loved teaching, doesn't mean I have to do it until I'm in the grave...so here we are.

We scooped up the property and our budget only allowed me to start the bookstore. The motel renovation is for another year (those lumber prices need to come down!). Once we acquired the property, I literally couldn't stop myself from opening the store. There was no way I was waiting for my kiddos to be done with school! So, for now, we are a weekend and summer store.

We love the idea of a Book Cabin - we’d love to hear about the cabin itself, any history behind it, and why you chose it as your shop location!

Our little cabin was part of the Trinity Rock Motel corporation and was built by two brothers for their mother who opened up a farm stand. My understanding is that the farm stand was only open a few years. The brothers did a beautiful job including large rustic logs in the interior.  It needed almost no work to open a retail shop.

We chose this location for two reasons: real estate in the village is too expensive to purchase or rent and the property allowed for both of us to have a project for our LG future. We hope that as word gets out about our new shop - it will become a sweet destination for tourists and locals who are looking for something besides t-shirt shops.

What can customers expect to see at the cabin?

You’ll find books for all ages (mostly contemporary fiction and nonfiction), toys (a range of outdoor and indoor games featuring DJECO products), writing supplies (journals, notecards, grammar pencils, and paper products featuring E Frances Paper Company and Moleskin), art activities (amazing projects for children and sketch products for all ages), bookish gifts (Fly Paper Products candles, barware, totebags, and stickers), and other gifts (Mira windchimes, Parsley and Paisley drink coasters).

Book Cabin-3.jpg

We’d love to hear five of your top book recommendations for summer.

This question is like asking a mother who their favorite child is! Some recent favorites for adults (that have not been featured by Reese and Jenna!):

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart made me ache for the children who grow up in homes plagues by substance abuse.

Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country by Pam Houston is for readers who loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Big Girl, Small Town by Michelle Gallen will make you laugh and quickly cringe as Majella deals with her family's difficult situation.

Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay is a quick paced read for sitting lakeside this summer.

House of Sticks by Ly Tran is a timely memoir about her family's immigration to the United States and growing up with a controlling father in a foreign land.

What’s next for the Book Cabin - any plans for the future?

I have HUGE plans for our future and look forward to growing with the community. I would love to add a snack and drink cart and additional themed book buildings on the existing property. I would also love to work with the community providing unique teacher workshops and scholarships for classroom libraries. There is so much we can do together as a reading and writing community for Warren County.

At the Lake: Bear's Cup

Have you been to Bear’s Cup in Bolton? We fell in love with their delicious pastries last summer and though this summer has been a liiiittle different to say the least, it’s been exciting to watch the “pandemic pivots” they’ve made with the business - including a beautiful walkup window, pre-orders, and even delivery. We caught up with Danielle and Louis, the husband-wife duo behind Bear’s Cup, to find out a bit more about them - and of course - about their amazing bagels and pastries!

Bear's Cup Bolton

Tell us about yourselves!

I’m Danielle, and I’m originally from New Jersey (hence The 201 sandwich on our menu!) and Louis is from Long Island. We met in NYC and prior to opening Bear’s Cup, we lived together in Astoria, Queens for five years. We moved to Bolton Landing just before opening Bear’s Cup and we have a 16 month old son named Teddy who is our world.

How did the idea for Bear's Cup come about?

Before Bear’s Cup, I was a NYC-based professional singer for over 10 years and Louis worked in the finance world for 13 years. We both were inspired daily by the bagel shop/coffeehouse we lived above in Astoria called NYCBCH. We would get coffee or breakfast in the mornings and almost every day after work, Louis would get a bagel sandwich from there, too. We visited Bolton Landing frequently to see my family and both fell in love with the vibe over time. We always dreamed of having our own business someday, so between Louis’s passion for baking and my knowledge of the hospitality/food industry, we decided to head north and take on our own shop together.

Bears Cup Bolton NY

Amazing! Tell us more about your background in the industry.

My parents own The Huddle Kitchen & Bar here in Bolton Landing so we’ve been coming to town since 2014. I was thrown into the food & service industry at a young age working for my parents at their first restaurant, The Valley Pub, in our hometown Oakland, NJ. Then in college, I went on to receive most of my professional training with Hillstone Restaurant Group. I worked for Hillstone in NYC, LA, and then back home in NJ where I completed my 8 year run with the company.

Louis started baking with his grandma at a very young age and his passion only grew as the recipes and baking projects became more complex. Eventually he was putting 72 hours into making homemade bagels in his mom’s kitchen oven at home on Long Island on the weekends.

We must know - how did you come up with the name Bear’s Cup?

We actually were trying to name our unborn business and unborn son at the same time (I was 5 months pregnant). It was months of crossing names off lists and not feeling like we had found the one quite yet. Bear’s Cup was being called “Baked On Lake Time” for awhile but it felt long and just wasn’t perfect.

Then one day, we were looking through some names for our son, and I asked “what about Theodore!?” We both loved it immediately and my mom reminded us that Theodore is actually my grandpa’s middle name! Louis and I loved the fact that it was versatile with nickname options (Theo, Teddy, Ted) and loved that it had family roots attached. We figured we would call him Teddy, which made us think of “teddy bear”, and the word “bear” felt very “Adirondacks”, and from there it just came to mind - “Bear’s Cup!” It was an epiphany within a matter of moments where after months of deliberating, both our son and our shop were named on the same day within minutes of each other and it finally felt right!

Your shop is amazing! Who designed it?

We designed it ourselves but the process was also a collaborative effort amongst our family and friends. We knew we wanted to bring a piece of our NYC roots with us while tying in the vibe of our new home- the Adirondacks. Most of the work was done by our good friend Josh Loveland of Loveland Construction Custom Framing & Finishes.

Since we can’t step inside this summer due to the pandemic, what are some of the ways you’ve pivoted to serve your customers during this time?

We built an outdoor counter and new pickup window to facilitate a socially distanced walk-up experience, which has been great. We also introduced “Beat the Line”, so our customers can pre-order bagels, cream cheese, breads, and pastries via email to pick up the following day at our pickup window.

On weekends, we’ve been offering delivery to Bolton, Queensbury, Glens Falls, Saratoga and beyond. We even have our own booth at the Farmers Market here in Bolton where we focus mainly on our artisanal breads menu. We’re looking to expand and get into markets elsewhere, too, so stay tuned!

So, everything you guys bake is delicious. Who comes up with all the amazing recipes?

We take inspiration from our hometowns, our travels, and each other. Ultimately our recipes are a group effort. Each one is handcrafted with love from scratch, and as a team we tweak and give input until we feel it’s perfect. Sometimes we get lucky and our accidents even end up becoming some of our best recipes.

Do you have a personal favorite?

For bagels, our “everything” bagel is most popular and the house pick amongst staff as well. For cream cheese, the must-try is our homemade veggie but honey-sriracha has definitely become a fan favorite! As far as our pastries go, the bear claw is EVERYONE’s favorite! On Sunday mornings they sell fast and we’re constantly putting a new batch into the oven - so get here early!

What’s next for you guys? Any big (or small) plans?

We are going to grow - that’s been our goal from day one. As for what that looks like right now, we feel we need to be patient, stay focused on our product and just see what opportunities present themselves. The world has changed a lot this past year, which has taught us to adapt and pivot as necessary. We are humbled and grateful to still be here doing what we love and to still be receiving overwhelming support and feedback from our customers.

At the Lake: Love is on Lake George Cruises

It’s been the hottest summer in recent memory, and we can’t think of a better way to spend these warm days than at the lake - better yet - on or in the lake! If you’re eager to get out on the water but find yourselves without a boat like us, Captain Ron from Love is on Lake George Cruises is your guy.

Fun fact: Tom planned a birthday picnic for me on an island on Lake George back in June and we rode in style aboard their 1971 lake cruiser to get to our picnic spot - truly one of the best days of our year.

Anyway! Read on for our chat with (Captain) Ron Miller and find out how to book a cruise yourself!

What brought you to Lake George?

I grew up in a Navy family moving around the world and around the country. Kathy was born and raised in Glens Falls. We met at college in Indiana. She at St. Mary's and me at Notre Dame. We moved around the country raising our 3 children, and finally decided to settle in the Lake George region 10 years ago. We love sharing all the beauty of our region with others.

Rumor has it that you’re a former Navy fighter and test pilot…that’s who we’d want piloting our cruise! Although there are obvious differences, what are some similarities between piloting a fighter jet and a boat?

I was a Navy fighter pilot flying jets off aircraft carriers and then as an Experimental Test Pilot for McDonnell Douglas flying the F-15, F-18 and T-45 aircraft. One similarity with piloting a boat is the need to know and respect the weather! When I have a precise docking in tough conditions, I tell folks I used to land jets on aircraft carriers, if I embarrass myself with an ugly docking, I keep my mouth shut!

Ha! So, how did Love is on Lake George Cruises come to be?

Having bought the Lyman, then seeing a possible synergy with Kathy's business, Love is in New York, I thought it would be smart and fun to turn a personal liability, i.e. old wooden boat, into a business asset.

The boat itself is a 1971 Lyman, Soft-Top Sleeper with the original Crusader/Chrysler 318 engine, 225 hp. An original lake cruiser. You learn quick when your boat takes on water faster than the bilge pump can pump it overboard, you add another bilge pump! It is in great shape now, reliable and looking good. We believe she has been on Lake George her entire life.

What do you love the most about taking folks on cruises?

We meet some really interesting people and we enjoy watching them fall in love with Lake George. And they come back! The most fun cruises are the surprise marriage proposals and special family occasions.

A special cruise that comes to mind was with a woman from Houston who returned to Lake George after 50+ years. She had an old photograph of herself (as a little girl) with her Dad and her dog on a rock on an island somewhere in the Narrows. She wanted to find that spot. We found it! It was very emotional for her and satisfying for me.

Amazing! So, what's one of your favorite routes for a cruise?

Through the Narrows, past the Mother Bunch and a visit to the hamlet of Hulett's Landing.

Tom is always talking about his dream to own a wooden boat - any words of wisdom?

Don't sign-on to wooden boat project without your eyes wide open! And as far as tips for boating in general, be sure to get on-the-water instruction in the vessel you are operating.

What’s next for the Cruises?

We had a bit of a game changer last season when The Sagamore Resort made us one of their limited Preferred Waterfront Vendors, all good. For 2020, we added a second boat to serve the water taxi market, as we get calls for simple A to B water transportation. Our 24 foot Key West Center Console is the right equipment! So far so good.

What’s the best way to get on the boats?

All of our cruises are by reservation, and we offer online booking here.

A phone call or email gets it all started, and Kathy takes over from there. We get the best outcome for our customers the more we know about the experience they’re hoping for before we get on the water. She helps with any special requests i.e. taking photos, ground transportation, or arranging for catered meals.

We cruise May through October!

Before we go, tell us a little more about Kathy’s business Love is in New York!

Well, Kathy has grown a very locally focused Lake George gifts and décor business into a successful regional, NYS certified women owned enterprise. With an online store and wholesale customers from Plattsburg to Old Forge to Saratoga and beyond she is very busy! Find out more at loveisinnewyork.com.

At the Lake: Erlowest E-gloos

We’re excited to bring you the first in our new At the Lake series - and what better place to start than one that holds a special place in our hearts - The Inn at Erlowest (where we had our wedding reception!). Sure, some folks may not think of the lake as a winter destination, but with the Winter Carnival, Ice Bars, and now, igloos (or as they call them at Erlowest: e-gloos!) - winter at the lake is the new summer ;)

The Inn at Erlowest Lake George NY

With a gorgeous spot overlooking Lake George, The Inn at Erlowest was looking for a fun new way to provide outdoor dining with a view once the summer season ended, and this unique idea definitely fits the bill! We popped in to enjoy dinner in one of their e-gloos earlier this month, and it definitely has our vote as a perfect winter date night.

Decked out in white lights (and outfitted with their own little heaters!), the e-gloos are perched on the patio - a prime location to enjoy the view as the sunset turned the sky pink. It just so happened that our e-gloo was also next to the gorgeous outdoor fireplace - always a hit in the summer and even more appreciated in the winter! We couldn’t help but pop out to enjoy the crackling fire (and the view) between courses.

Speaking of courses, the meal (prepared by Chef Scott Dewar), was outstanding. Some favorites: the Harvest Bisque with Maple Cream and Spiced Pumpkin Seeds (like candy!), the Jumbo Shrimp with Polenta, the Brown Sugar Cured Salmon, and the Scallops (cooked on a salt block!). We couldn’t stop talking about the food the entire drive home (and Bri is still talking about the scallops!).

They’ll be serving dinner in the e-gloos through April 15 (which is perfect for our winters that don’t seem to end!). You can grab more details here, or reserve by giving them a call at 518-668-5928.
