My Glens Falls: Dan Gibbs

This week we’re chatting with Dan Gibbs! We first discovered Dan’s photos from around Glens Falls on Instagram (here’s his account) last summer and have loved seeing a glimpse of the city through his eyes. Read on to find out what brought him back to Glens Falls after living all over the world, a fond memory of the city Christmas tree from his youth, and the one store he’d like to see come to the area (we agree!).

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Daniel J. Gibbs. I was born in Glens Falls and raised in Hudson Falls. My mom’s side immigrated from Italy over 100 years ago. My dad’s side has longer histories in Salem and Hartford, NY. My mom and dad still live locally and my brother lives in Denver, Colorado.

I’m a teacher by trade (over 20 years), but substituting currently and looking for my next teaching or admin position. Eventually looking to go in administration full-time.

On Life in Glens Falls

I lived in the area for 33 years of my life but lived in Germany for 2 years, the French part of Switzerland for 6 years (and many summers) and spent 5 years in Los Angeles/Hollywood.

I moved back to the area in August 2019 to be closer to my family, to have a quieter life, and to enjoy the seasons again and more. I’m living in downtown Glens Falls now and loving it! Mostly feeling the Hallmark vibes!

Some of my hobbies are: reading (a lot), traveling, cooking and baking, movies, tv/Netflix, my vinyls (especially classical and jazz), hiking, long walks and biking.

On the Past

Growing up, my memories of Glens Falls were going to Woolworths with my grandma, Russell and Waite to look at all the fun office supplies, Boston Candy Kitchen (watching the ribbon candy being made), Crandall Library, Crandall Park and the Civic Center (where our families names used to be on original seats). One fond memory was the year my grandmothers evergreen was chosen to be the official tree for Glens Falls Christmas Tree lighting.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I love the variety of restaurants to choose from downtown! Some favorites are Morgan and Co., Farmacy and Craft on 9...but there are so many now!

An ideal day would be a long walk in Glens Falls or SGF (Betar Path), reading and writing in the Spot, Happy Hour at Fenimore’s and then dinner at one of the aforementioned restaurants! Maybe even a show at the Wood Theater after (theater or dance).

On the Future

One thing I wish I could bring to the city...hmmm...more acceptance of one another, people saying hi to one another and Trader Joe’s.
