My Glens Falls: Candice Frye

This week we caught up with Candice Frye! You may recognize her as the Executive Director of LARAC. Read on to learn how she got her start, her thoughts on community, and what she’d include in her perfect Glens Falls day!

Candice Frye Glens Falls NY LARAC

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Candice Frye, Director of LARAC. I live in Hudson Falls with my dog Ace - he is a 15 year old rescue pitbull that I have had since he was a puppy.

On Life in Glens Falls

I fell in love with Glens Falls by accident. I was a 'displaced educator' trying to figure out what one does when they have a Masters in Special Education and do not want to work in a classroom. I started working part-time for LARAC and part-time for the Glens Falls Farmers' Market, two parts of Glens Falls that are all heart and community. I had no chance of not falling head over heels.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is how quickly we can come together as a community - whether it is to help a fellow community member or put on a fun event. I am always amazed at how many people are willing to step up every time!

I think a hidden gem of Glens Falls is the arts community and its supporting businesses! Art in the Public Eye will be hosting Gallery 99 at LARAC in March, an opportunity to buy original art for under $100! That’s amazing! I have already been saving up money to buy something special! We have so many talented artists as well as local businesses who are reasonably priced and eager to work on creative projects - I often call M&M Printing and Wombat Graphics to help me create fun ideas I have in my head for gifts or home projects.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

The perfect day in Glens Falls starts at the Farmers Market. There are so many good breakfast options - a crepe from Dickinson's Delights, or a bagel from Alchemy Bagel, chocolate milk from Battenkill or a cider from Saratoga Apple! And catching up with ALL my friends - both customers and farmers. And then stopping by the Library (I am in love with our library!). And then shopping (for me bargain shopping is my favorite). Starting at Finders Keepers because buying something new to me always makes me happy and then hitting Whisper Boutique!

On the Past

I grew up in Warrensburg, NY and every year we would go to the LARAC June Arts Festival. My mom, grandma, and I would walk and shop until we were too tired and then every year we would end our day with Strawberry Shortcake on the church lawn. No matter the weather or what chaos was happening in our lives - this tradition continued. When my mom passed away in 2016, my grandma and I made sure to continue the tradition. In 2019 my grandma (now in her 90’s) was not feeling up to all of the walking - so I brought the cake to her. Because some traditions are just that important!

Another story on the past: My love for our local music scene started when my friends invited me to Open Mic Night at Hot Shots on South St. I had just started working part-time at LARAC as the Community Outreach Coordinator. After a few weeks of watching all types of talented musicians sing solo, sing on the spot collaborations, and just make great music, I made it my mission to figure out a way for LARAC to support musicians the same way we had been supporting visual artists for many years. Every week felt like musical happiness - people coming together, many straight out of work coming to share the thing they love to do most. With the support of my boss, LARAC started coordinating music for Take a Bite, moved from one stage to three at the June Arts Festival, included music at the Fall Festival, and we continue to work with other city events to coordinate paid performance opportunities. These late night performances on South St is where my passion for supporting local music began.

On the Future

If I had a magic wand, I would move the college closer to Glens Falls or find a way to make Glens Falls more inclusive to SUNY Adirondack students. I love the feel of a college town! I think the diverse energies and life experiences that college students from outside of Upstate NY bring is important to the growth of a compassionate city. To me Glens Falls sometimes feels like a fairytale, but then I look around and realize that it is easy to feel like we are in harmony when we mostly all look and think alike. The world is much bigger than Glens Falls and I would wave a wand to help us realize the positive impact of diversity in a community.

My Glens Falls: Alisha Stosic-Hanley

This week we caught up with Alisha Stosic-Hanley! She's been a local for the past three years or so, but if you've ever met her, it seems like she's been here her whole life! Tom first met Alisha through the Glens Falls Rotary Club, but you may recognize her as the friendly leader of the team at the Queensbury Senior Center. Read on to hear her thoughts on the spirit of our community, a few of her favorite spots, and where to find some amazing fries with gravy!

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I am Alisha Stosic-Hanley and I am the Executive Director of the Queensbury Senior Center. I have had the honor of being in this position for the last year and a half and am grateful each day I walk into the Center. I am a mom to 4 wonderful kiddos, 3 boys: 18, 15 and 13 and a little girl who is 6 and 3 quarters (in her own words). I enjoy being involved in all sorts of activities, but especially fun and unique fundraisers that go to support the many wonderful organizations in our area.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Southern California, graduated high school in Southwest Missouri and went to college in Montana — I only moved to the Glens Falls area 3 and a half years ago! Although it has been a short time, I have fallen in love with the charm, beauty and goodwill of Glens Falls. It is easy to see why so many people stay, or come back, to this area. Being that I have lived in many different regions of the US, I have had the opportunity to explore and discover what makes each place special and unique. It did not take me long to figure out the idiosyncrasies of Glens Falls and the amazing people who call it home.

I currently rent a townhome that is just on the outskirts of Glens Falls. It is easy to get to downtown (6 minutes), to work (10 minutes on a good day) and all the other places a busy working mom needs to go. I enjoy finding fun, local items to decorate my home with to give it the modern small town charm appeal. If you see me out walking a Saint Bernard puppy all hours of the day - make sure to wave! She will most likely be walking me....

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is, hands down, the people. I have lived in many places and this area is a true testament to the power of a group of like minded individuals that seek to improve their community through service, activism and education. I have had the honor of being enveloped in a network of friends that have turned into family. Being in the ‘senior industry’ for so long, I would say some of our greatest hidden gems, and most valuable assets, is our senior population! The wisdom, humor and honesty this group serves up on a daily basis is truly book worthy. And if you ever doubt this, I challenge you to join me for just one day at the Queensbury Senior Center! You will go home feeling better than when you entered....the kindness and love that seniors give freely is priceless.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day is enjoying all the wonderful offerings of Glens Falls! I would start with a heart pumping workout at Core of Glens Falls, where I would be encouraged and welcomed by some of the best people around. Afterwards I would grab a bulletproof maple latte at Spektor Coffee Roasters, because “coffee is the most important meal of the day”! From there I may venture a walk on the Betar Byway with my dog and kiddos. A perfect evening would start at Craft on 9 (poutine is to die for!) and either catching one of the amazing performances at the Adirondack Film Festival (if in season) or doing a fun paint and sip at Sip n’ Canvas downtown. My youngest kiddos and I enjoy cheering on the Adirondack Thunder as much as we can as well! To finish the night would be a handcrafted cocktail at Fenimore’s while enjoying the music of a talented local artist.

On the Past

One memory I have in particular is when I first visited Glens Falls back in 2000, which was my first real experience on the East Coast. I had the pleasure of dining at Massie’s Italian Restaurant and was blown away that people actually ordered fries with GRAVY on them. I had never heard of such a thing. Now I’m hooked!!

…and On the Future

The future of Glens Falls and its surrounding areas is so incredibly bright! I would love to see an outdoor music venue brought to the area to enjoy the many talented local musicians that call this area home. Two of my favorite things are summer nights and live music - put them together and you have a winning combo.

My Glens Falls: Eileen and Andy Mentor

Have you ever thought about selling it all and taking off to travel the world? Eileen and Andy Mentor (and their little ones, Rowan and Murphy) did just that. In 2018, they sold their Glens Falls home and spent six months adventuring through Southeast Asia. Now that they’re back in town, we were excited to catch up with them to learn a bit more about what inspired their travels, what they love about being back in Glens Falls, and of course, what destinations they’d recommend to anyone planning a trip to Asia.

Crayons and Carry-ons

Tell us about yourselves!

Hi, we are Eileen and Andy Mentor.  We run Crayons and Carry-Ons, and are the owners and creators of a local photo and video production company, Mentor Media.  We have two children, Rowan and Murphy, and we share a huge addiction to travel.

In the beginning of 2018 we hatched a plan to sell most of our possessions, packed up our children and traveled throughout Southeast Asia for 6 months.  We’ve never believed in the narrative that you must work until you retire and only then can you travel long-term. We believe life is meant to be lived and we rarely feel as alive as we do while traveling.

A lot of things had to fall into place to pull this off but as fate would have it, we reached our savings goals, sold just about everything and bought enough camera equipment to capture our experience on the upcoming trip. We started Crayons and Carry-Ons with the intention to share our experiences with friends and family through a series of vlogs, blogs and photos but it became much more! It has opened us up to a huge community of other traveling families and along the way we were able to meet so many amazing people!

So in October of 2018, we set out for Thailand and ended up traveling to 20 cities across 4 countries in 6 months.

On Life in Glens Falls

I (Eileen) first moved to Glens Falls in 2003. When I graduated college, I escaped the snow and moved down to Wilmington, North Carolina which is where Andy and I met. While we both thoroughly enjoyed the warm weather, we decided to move back up to Glens Falls to start a family.

Six years and two kids later, we have rented three apartments throughout the city and purchased our first home which was located on Webster Avenue. It was the perfect place to put down roots, or so we thought. The neighbors were amazing, we could walk downtown, it was right next to Crandall Park and in September, we were able to watch the hot air balloons fly right over our house but still, we couldn’t shake our desire to live abroad. So fast forward two and a half years, we put the house up for sale, accepted an offer 9 days later and were that much closer to our dream of full-time travel.

Our Perfect Glens Falls Day

We love Glens Falls in the summer so an ideal day would include waking up and heading right to the outdoor Farmer’s Market. It is a great place to walk around and support small, local businesses. Afterwards, we make our way to Fresh ADK to enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast while the kids are kept busy on the playset. For lunch, you will find us on a patio, either at Raul’s or Downtown City Tavern. From there, we would head to Crandall Park to walk around and let the kids burn off some energy on the playground. If we are lucky enough to find a babysitter, we would then head to Common Roots or Northway Brewing for a pre-dinner beer. For dinner, there are so many amazing spots to choose from but our favorites are Craft on 9, Morgan & Co and if we need our Thai fix, Aroy Dee (the owners are the sweetest). Realistically though, we usually grab some meat from Oscars and vegetables from the Farmer’s Market and grill on our patio with friends and family.

On the Past

While we have so many fond memories from the Adirondack Balloon Festival, Taste of the North Country, hockey games and other great events that Glens Falls puts on, our greatest memory will always be starting our family here. Both of our children were born in the Snuggery at Glens Falls Hospital and thanks to the amazing nurses and staff, our experiences were wonderful.

No matter where we end up living or traveling, we will always consider Glens Falls “home”.

On the Future

We are lucky to live in an area with a good amount of options but if we had a magic wand, we would like to see a few more. Andy always jokes about opening a burrito and craft beer restaurant so we would love to see something like that pop up and I would be thrilled if a Trader Joe’s came to the area. Another thing we fell in love with on our trip were the international food markets which were more like modern day food courts for grown-ups. You could find anything from the typical American hot dog to bahn mi from Vietnam or chicken tikka from India. We would absolutely love seeing something like that with more international options.

Favorite Travel Destinations

Lastly, we would like to include some of our favorite places that we visited and would recommend to anyone that may be considering a trip to Asia.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Situated in the north, it is a small city filled with over 300 temples, some of the most beautiful markets and the best place to visit ethical elephant sanctuaries.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - In the capital city of Malaysia, you will find endless activities for children and some of the largest playgrounds we have ever seen. It is a very multicultural city with residents and visitors from all over the world contributing to amazing food and beautiful architecture.

Ha Long Bay and Tam Coc, Vietnam - If you find yourself in Northern Vietnam, these two places are a must do. Take an overnight cruise through Ha Long Bay and be surrounded by 1,600 islands and head to Tam Coc to relax and ride bicycles through lush rice paddies and towering limestone cliffs.

Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia - Located off the coast of Bali, this island is home to some of the most beautiful blue water we’ve ever seen. You can rent a golf cart to explore as there are no cars allowed on the island.  It is definitely worth a visit.

You can follow all of our adventures on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube and find out where we are off to next!

My Glens Falls: Grace McDonald

We caught up with Grace McDonald this week! You’ll recognize her friendly smile from Graceful Touch Massage Therapy (note to self: book a massage ASAP!). She shared a bit about her connection to Glens Falls and raising her daughter here, the joys of entrepreneurship, and one type of restaurant that she’d like to see added to the mix downtown.

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Grace McDonald. I’m the owner of Graceful Touch Massage Therapy (Winner of The Post Star Best of the Region 2019) in Queensbury, NY. I was born in Belize, Central America. My mom and I lived in South Glens Falls for 5 years before moving to Glens Falls in my freshman year of high school and I’ve lived here ever since. I’m in my 40’s now, married to my husband Scott for 27 years, and we have one beautiful daughter, Jade, who is now 26 years old and married to my son-in-law Daniel.

On Life in Glens Falls

You could say that I grew up here in Glens Falls. I’ve definitely seen the amazing changes that have happened and continue to happen in this amazing community. My mother was the seamstress for many years at Aroxy Dry Cleaners until she retired and that’s why we settled here in Glens Falls. What I love about living in Glens Falls is that it’s the best place to raise a family. After graduating high school, I got married and had my daughter. When Jade started school at Sanford Street, I worked as a Teacher Aide in Big Cross Street School for over 10 years. Now, I work with teachers helping them relieve their stress levels and they hold a special place in my heart.

Thinking back on those years raising Jade, there’s no better place I would have wanted to be doing that and working with the children in my community than here in Glens Falls. The Crandall Library was a place downtown that we loved going to get books to read and do activities as she grew up. We also went to Crandall Park to play in the summer months and sledding in the winter months. My husband and I still live in the home close to Sanford Street where we raised our daughter. My momma lives in one apartment and we live in the other. We have great neighbors that help each other and some new families that have moved in with little ones. Being close to downtown with the diversity in shops and restaurants is also one of the many things that I also love about living in Glens Falls.

On Entrepreneurship

In October 2017 I opened my business, Graceful Touch Massage Therapy inside The Skin Transformation Center on Bay Road and the support from the people in the community has been so awesome - my heart is so happy! I won Best of the Region 2019 and was 3rd in 2018! Today, I’m booked out 6 weeks ahead! What a supportive community I live in that makes me a part of their wellness program and I’m so grateful to be a part of it! I look forward to many more years doing what I love, receiving the support and supporting the businesses (Dickinson’s Delights, Adirondack Etching, Sensibiliteas and others) in my community here in Glens Falls.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in Glens Falls would be going to have breakfast at Steve’s Place. I love their meat lovers omelet with their home fries! Then going to get an acupuncture treatment at The Acupuncture Studio on Warren Street (Brooke is the best) and after that having lunch at The Exchange Café with their delicious sandwiches and salads, before heading to my office for the rest of the day and working with the best clients anyone could ask for!

On the Future

If I could have anything here in Glens Falls, it would be an Indian restaurant downtown! True, there’s one in Lake George, but to have one downtown along with Siam Thai, Mikado (Japanese) and the other fantastic restaurants would be just perfect! I’m hoping that one day soon that will become a reality!

Thanks Grace!

My Glens Falls: Nick Taylor, Jr.

This week we had the pleasure of chatting with Nick Taylor, Jr., who you may recognize from Taylor and Leonard Insurance! Read on to find out how long Nick’s family has called Glens Falls home, his family’s go-to for smoothies and sandwiches, a few great memories from his childhood (including a bike ride to a market we all knew and loved!), and lots more.

Nick Taylor Jr

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Nick Taylor, Jr. and I am a local insurance agent at Taylor & Leonard in Glens Falls. I have also earned my CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) & RICP® (Retirement Income Certified Professional) designations and have a financial planning practice through my affiliation with Equity Services, Inc as a registered representative and investment adviser representative (www.nicholastaylorjr.com). I married my wife Meaghan in 2016 and shortly after, in 2017, we welcomed our daughter into the world. I wear many hats every day but my favorite and most important one is being a Daddy! People around town probably best know me as the insurance guy who says his “Insurance Service Never Sleeps!”. I pride myself on being available 24/7 to folks that need me. I am a 2003 graduate of Glens Falls High School and a 2007 graduate of Siena College with a degree in Marketing. I began my practice within my family’s business in 2007 and have never looked back!

On Life in Glens Falls

Our family has roots back to 1896 (as far back as we can trace). Every single generation of our family has chosen to call the Glens Falls area our home. Both sets of my grandparents still live here in the community as do parents and siblings. My parents and all three of my sisters and their families live within 2 miles of my house (and office!). I was born in Glens Falls and grew up here. As our family got bigger we required more and more space. So much so that we ended buying 3 different houses on Coolidge Ave as our family grew! By the last house, I was a junior in high school playing football for the Glens Falls Indians so instead of hiring a moving company we just offered the lineman on the team a few pizzas to move our stuff a few houses down the street!

The day after I graduated from Siena College I was in the office at our family insurance agency in Glens Falls and I’ve never left. Our friends & family, our business and the community spirit anchors us down here for good. We could never picture leaving. Our roots run deep and with every passing day they run even deeper. Our business alone provides us thousands of deep, meaningful relationships with the members of our community. We laugh, cheer and cry with them as they move through their lives and they do the same with us during our own triumphs and heartbreaks. I can’t imagine living life anywhere else.

We purchased our family home on the outskirts of Glens Falls which is technically Queensbury although we are in the Glens Falls School District. I own our business’s building on Glen St. in Glens Falls with my mother and father. The building has been in our family since 1994. We affectionately like to call it “the old building and loan” (of course referencing the loveable business establishment in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”). The building is an old one but it has a ton of character and a primo location- especially during great community events like the Adirondack Balloon Festival and Memorial Day Parade. The parade is one of our favorite events and we usually host a hospitality tent with free bagels, donuts, and coffee for folks passing by. This hospitality tent really grew from a childhood memory of mine. As a kid, I fondly and distinctly remember the excitement of the parade generated by a simple act of my grandmother - boxes of Dunkin’ Donuts for all of us kids!! We have carried the tradition on for decades and it now extends to outside of our immediate family! We usually have dozens of parade watchers congregating around our headquarters at 553 Glen St.

What I love about my own neighborhood is three of my direct neighbors have all owned their home for 30 years. They built and never left. I’ve found that to be the case all over the area. Folks bought their homes in their 20’s and 30’s and never left. They love the area and never want to leave.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

One of the things I am most excited about is the rebirth of downtown Glens Falls. Not only from an aesthetic point of view but its variety of offerings in terms of shows, events, restaurants, community events etc. We find ourselves downtown several days /nights a week. When I returned home from college in 2007, downtown Glens Falls was still mired in a slow and sleepy environment. Now there is hustle and bustle. There is energy and a feeling that we are on the cusp of creating a special part of the city once again (like we had back in 30’s and 40’s). As weird as it sounds, I sometimes enjoy not being able to find a spot to park downtown because it is reflective of our little city’s emerging growth and prosperity.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

We LOVE to eat out. Eating great food, running into friends and clients, and not having to cook and clean is a winning combination in our busy household! You will find us at Kelly’s Roots probably 3-4 times a week (at least) enjoying their smoothies and sandwiches. We are on a first name basis with basically their entire staff and Kelly starts cooking our daughter’s order the minute we walk through the door! We LOVE that feeling of personal connection to another local, family business. We also love to dine at and support The Queensbury Hotel and The Bullpen. Some of the nicest folks in our community are steering those ships and they are doing a phenomenal job. We love grabbing a bite to eat and then walking through City Park and downtown. We love bumping into friends, family, and clients unexpectedly on a stroll through downtown.

On the Past

One of my favorite memories has to do with an old Glens Falls staple that a lot of us still miss - Barber’s Market. As a young kid, I excitedly rode my bike from Coolidge Avenue over to Barber’s Market on Shippey Street, hoping to find the perfect Mother’s Day gift for my Mom. After a few minutes of perusing through the store, I had found it - a little potted plant that I was sure she would love! I rode home and ran into the house to present my Mom her new fresh plant. As I shouted, “we have to water it!” she sweetly explained to me that it was a FAKE plant! I was so embarrassed! But of course she loved it and the fact that I had rode over to Barber’s Market on my own to purchase it for her. In fact, she still has the plant today… it is truly the gift that keeps on giving!

Another favorite memory of mine was stepping out onto the basketball court at the Civic Center for the high school state championship final back in 2003. It was an indescribable experience to look up at 7,000 members of your community in a sea of red, supporting the home team. The crowd noise was deafening. We felt like professional athletes. I’ll never forget it.

On the Future

A local bookstore. I realize that many people buy their books online and the original brick and mortar model of a bookstore is a tough deal these days. But a place like the Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga and Manchester, VT seems to be thriving. I personally love to read and I love to mark up my books with notes as I read them. I love building my own personal library. In a world where everyone is constantly looking through screens, they may surprise themselves with the entertainment that a few books in hand could offer them.

On community

In my business, I have a unique position. My clients simply tell me what is going on with their lives. They tell me about themselves, their friends, and their families. I have deeply personal information and stories that are brought to me every day. And what I find so rewarding and heartening are the stories of true community spirit that my clients tell. People in our community are doing some incredible things out there. They are helping each other. They are kind. These stories don’t often get told in the evenings news but I hear about them all the time and they make me love our little city that much more.

My Glens Falls: Dan Gibbs

This week we’re chatting with Dan Gibbs! We first discovered Dan’s photos from around Glens Falls on Instagram (here’s his account) last summer and have loved seeing a glimpse of the city through his eyes. Read on to find out what brought him back to Glens Falls after living all over the world, a fond memory of the city Christmas tree from his youth, and the one store he’d like to see come to the area (we agree!).

Dan Gibbs Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Daniel J. Gibbs. I was born in Glens Falls and raised in Hudson Falls. My mom’s side immigrated from Italy over 100 years ago. My dad’s side has longer histories in Salem and Hartford, NY. My mom and dad still live locally and my brother lives in Denver, Colorado.

I’m a teacher by trade (over 20 years), but substituting currently and looking for my next teaching or admin position. Eventually looking to go in administration full-time.

On Life in Glens Falls

I lived in the area for 33 years of my life but lived in Germany for 2 years, the French part of Switzerland for 6 years (and many summers) and spent 5 years in Los Angeles/Hollywood.

I moved back to the area in August 2019 to be closer to my family, to have a quieter life, and to enjoy the seasons again and more. I’m living in downtown Glens Falls now and loving it! Mostly feeling the Hallmark vibes!

Some of my hobbies are: reading (a lot), traveling, cooking and baking, movies, tv/Netflix, my vinyls (especially classical and jazz), hiking, long walks and biking.

On the Past

Growing up, my memories of Glens Falls were going to Woolworths with my grandma, Russell and Waite to look at all the fun office supplies, Boston Candy Kitchen (watching the ribbon candy being made), Crandall Library, Crandall Park and the Civic Center (where our families names used to be on original seats). One fond memory was the year my grandmothers evergreen was chosen to be the official tree for Glens Falls Christmas Tree lighting.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I love the variety of restaurants to choose from downtown! Some favorites are Morgan and Co., Farmacy and Craft on 9...but there are so many now!

An ideal day would be a long walk in Glens Falls or SGF (Betar Path), reading and writing in the Spot, Happy Hour at Fenimore’s and then dinner at one of the aforementioned restaurants! Maybe even a show at the Wood Theater after (theater or dance).

On the Future

One thing I wish I could bring to the city...hmmm...more acceptance of one another, people saying hi to one another and Trader Joe’s.

My Glens Falls: Emily Noble

This week, we caught up with Emily Noble (or as we know her - The Muffin Top Baker)! After following her and her adorable cookies on Instagram for so long, it was so nice to finally connect with her. Read on to find out what brought her to Glens Falls from her nearby hometown of Cambridge, her favorite spots for special occasions (and for an average Sunday), and hear what’s next for The Muffin Top Baker!

Muffin Top Baker Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Emily Noble, but I'm more commonly known as The Muffin Top Baker! My husband Marcus and I live Glens Falls in the sweetest hundred-and-something-year old house just outside of downtown.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Cambridge NY and lived there nearly my entire life- it's a small one stop light farm town with a lot of charm and even more heart. Everyone knows everyone! Growing up, my parents taught me and my 6 siblings the importance of working hard, working honestly, and the value of a dollar. They taught us everything: how to prepare, plant, and grow amazing gardens, how high is too high to stack the firewood, how to raise and process our own Thanksgiving turkey, and how to live in a way that if a bad word was ever said about us, no one would truly believe it. We worked hard and played harder! There was always a snowmobile, ATV, or go-cart around that we would fix up and have the time of our lives with...with 6 siblings around there is never a dull moment!

In 2017 my husband and I bought our first home and moved to Glens Falls! My husband grew up in Queensbury and has worked at his family-owned business, Noble Ace Hardware in South Glens Falls, for years so he of course was very familiar with the area and always knew he wanted to come back to it. As we started house hunting, I quickly fell in love with Glens Falls and began to desperately hope we would find the right fit for us here! After 6-8 months of looking at houses, offers getting rejected, and starting to feel defeated, we toured a sweet old house that was walking distance from downtown (jackpot!), in our price range, and the perfect size for us! We put in our offer and it was accepted within 15 minutes...it was the day before my birthday and was hands-down the best present I've ever gotten! We are perfectly situated to be able to walk to Crandall Park for events, walk downtown for dinner and drinks, or just enjoy a nice evening stroll through the neighborhood!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

I love taking advantage of all the local gems (especially food options) around us! Take a Bite during the summer is a winner every time! The Food Truck Corral / Thursday Markets at The Shirt Factory are phenomenal too! I think people forget that The Shirt Factory is open year round, they get distracted by the outdoor events in the summer and think the inside is only open during the holiday season. But it’s not! There are lots of wonderful places open all year round inside. I regularly visit Alchemy Bagel Café and SensibiliTeas! The LARAC Festival and similar events have so many wonderful artists and creators that take part!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day would of course start with food! Some of our favorite places are Juicin' Jar, Kelly's Roots, and Spektor. Usually Sunday is the day I get to have breakfast with Marcus so Spektor is our go-to then. Their whole menu, but especially their breakfast menu, is just amazing! You've gotta try their avocado-lime breakfast sandwich if you've never had it!. I'm a big bookworm so next up would be the library! I always keep my eyes open for their huge book sales and walk away with way too many tote bags of new-to-me books. My husband then gets the honor of helping me get them home!  We love to check out local activities on our free days, festivals, the farmers market, walking/hiking trails, new shops and restaurants, tree lightings, you name it! We just love taking part in the community events, and of course there is a never ending list of things to do downtown in the evening! We might grab a bite at Downtown City Tavern or Davidsons on the way to a hockey game or other event at the Cool Insuring Area. If we have a couple friends to catch up with, The Bourbon Room never disappoints for a great experience. Or if its a special occasion we'll switch it up; we have a tradition on our wedding anniversary of a happy hour drink at Fenimore's, an amazing dinner at Morgan & Co, and then sit by the firepits outside of Park 26 for a nightcap and toast to the next year. We definitely don't take the great variety of options for granted!

And as much as we love experiencing what the area has to offer, evenings home are a favorite pastime as well, and I'm a sucker for a good home date! We open a bottle of wine, make a charcuterie board, sit on our porch under the string lights and just talk- the present, future plans and dreams, when we'll finally get a dog- we cover it all!

On the Past

Since I'm still new to the area, I don't have too many memories on the past. But the thing I have the longest connection with is the library. I remember making the 45 minute trek from Cambridge and coming to the Crandall Library with my sisters when we were younger and loading up on new books and movies. I'd always walk in and wonder what it must be like to have this library as your local library, I never guessed that it would one day be my local library! The first Christmas season after we bought our house, we went downtown for the tree lighting outside the library and to take part in all the holiday festivities. I remember watching everything happen around me as snow flurries fell and feeling like the town was in it's own little bubble- or more accurately, its own snow globe. I said to my husband "We just moved to Stars Hollow and I love it!"

On the Future

I'm amazed at the progression that has happened in the area in just the few years I've been here, and excited to see it continue to evolve and grow! I agree with a lot of others and do wish there was some more parking for downtown events, even finding a parking spot at midday on a Friday is a rare thing! I'd love to see a book store come back to the town! I utilize the library often, but love giving books as gifts and it would be so nice to have a local option for that!

By the Way…

I'm so thankful and grateful to everyone who has supported me and my business! If you follow along with The MuffinTop Baker on Facebook or Instagram, you've probably already seen that I just went full-time with the business! It is only possible because of the wonderful people who place custom cookie orders, come to my pop-up events, or pre-order during holidays that I am able to take this leap, and I am so appreciative of every single one of you! Fellow entrepreneurs and small business owners have been so incredibly supportive and encouraging as well, and some of them have become close and dear friends. I have some fun plans in the works for the upcoming year and can't wait to tell you all about them!

My Glens Falls: Michelle Waters

This week we talked with Michelle Waters! Find out what brought Michelle and her husband to the city just last year, a sweet memory from their first Christmas in their city home, and a unique idea they’d like to see in Glens Falls in the future!

Michelle Waters

Tell us about yourself!

I work at the Glens Falls Hospital Foundation as the Annual Giving and Donor Relations Coordinator. I also have a personal blog called The Urban Yardener, that I started this past spring!

My husband Garry and I moved to Glens Falls in the Spring of 2018 to a little house on a corner in the city. We have a cat named Fey and a puppy named Sansa.

On Life in Glens Falls

We moved to Glens Falls when we both started working here. Garry works for Andritz Inc. as a Mechanical Engineer and I started my job with the Glens Falls Hospital Foundation in 2017. We were drawn to the short commute and all the activities that city life could bring by remaining so close to town.

We own our home and when we bought it, one hundred percent of the house was covered in ivy. Grape vines were strewn across the garage and very unique and colorful flowers were growing at eye level. Ivy can be pretty, especially in the summer, but in the colder months the pretty greens also tend to disappear to reveal scraggly brown lines that cover the entire house. Since then, we have removed all of the ivy, although we have found it to be ever returning. We have made a few changes that truly allow it to feel more like ours, but there is still a lot of work to be done. My favorite room is our dining room located in the heart of the home where we have hosted many family and friends. My blog, The Urban Yardener, follows our journey with our home and the ivy vines. I use the term yardener because it is a small lot, but we have used every inch to reshape our space and learn more about gardening. It has been a fun adventure in our first home for sure.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

It may seem silly, but I avidly watched and have repeatedly re-watched the show, Gilmore Girls, and always wanted to visit Stars Hollow. Stars Hollow is a quaint and quirky small town in which the majority of the show takes place. The more I came to know Glens Falls I began to see many wonderful parallels. This included some of our local events such as sidewalk chalk competitions, movies in the park, and also the many great cafes and restaurants sprinkled throughout the town…there's even a central gazebo! We have been met with kindness and generosity as we navigate first-time home ownership and we feel very fortunate for our neighbors and location.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

On a weekend, we typically take our dog Sansa on a walk downtown. We enjoy brunches at The Peppermill in South Glens Falls and The Exchange Cafe. We enjoy spending time at Crandall Library, Lake George Olive Oil, The Hyde Museum, and had a fun date night at Sip and Canvas during Take-A-Bite. We enjoy being only a few blocks from Cooper's Cave Ale Company where we can get dinner and ice cream. It is also really nice being so close to the YMCA as there is less time between the front door and a great workout.

On the Past

One of my favorite Glens Falls memories took place this time last year. Garry and I visited a local Christmas tree stand for Snowball Tree Farm to pick out our tree. We did not have any cash and only had cards on us that day. The stand only accepted cash payments, but the people working at the stand told us that they would deliver the tree later that day to allow us time to stop at the bank on the way home to get some cash. I put on the music from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special and we started to decorate as we waited for our tree. When the doorbell rang, the gentleman from the stand had our tree in hand and was asking us about our house. Once he realized this was our first Christmas in our home, he generously gave us the Christmas tree and refused to accept any money and said, "Merry Christmas and welcome to the neighborhood!" This act of kindness warmed our home and made this tree extra special and I remember thinking how lucky we are to live here.

On the Future

My husband and I have thought it would be exciting if there was a Makerspace in the community. A Makerspace is a collaborative work space that provides tools and the opportunity to create anything and everything that a member could imagine. Members typically utilize the space through monthly membership fees. Some of our local schools have similar spaces, but there is not a space like this for the community at large to access. There have been many times when we have been working on a house project, but did not have the exact tool to complete the project, however we may not need that tool afterwards. A Makerspace would help to complete these types of projects, but also bring in new technology to spark education and conversations.

Through our work, we have met many great people from our community. At home, gardening has brought more opportunities for Garry and I to meet our neighbors and learn what Glens Falls is all about. I enjoy recording my stories through my blog to share funny anecdotes and to look back on how we have been shaped by our new experiences in our home and town in our little house on the corner.

My Glens Falls: Kelly Ehlert

This week we’re catching up with Kelly Ehlert! You’ll recognize her as the owner of Kelly's Roots (one of our go-to coffee and lunch spots!). Read on to find out about Kelly's (literal!) roots to the area, how the café came to be, and some of her Glens Falls favorites.

4A872382-9BA4-4B0D-9EDC-D24204FE98E4-2.jpg

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Kelly Ehlert! I'm the owner and chef of Kelly's Roots Café in Queensbury, NY.

I was born and raised in Glens Falls.

I grew up in an Italian family, and being around all the constant cooking had a huge impact on where I am today. I think spending so much time learning from my Mother and Grandmother while growing up definitely pushed me to pursue my dreams as a chef!

I graduated from Queensbury High School in 2011, and continued my education in Campbell, California culinary school (…hence the name of one of our customers favorite sandwiches, The Campbell Turkey Bacon). When opening my café, I wanted to bring some west coast inspiration to Glens Falls and it was important to me to show that in my menu as well as the café itself. I wanted to offer a place that not only has great food, but a place that is inviting and refreshing for the community. I wanted to bring new ideas to this area, and it is so rewarding to hear that people are excited and impressed with what we do at Kelly’s Roots.

On Life in Glens Falls

This past year, I bought my first home right here in Glens Falls! One of my favorite parts of living here is watching our small town grow and how involved the community is with the local small businesses!

After I finished culinary school I came back to the 518 because I'm a big family person and love being close to them. I also really enjoy how close we are to the Adirondacks. I grew up spending most days with my family on Lake George. Those memories are easily some of my favorites. I can’t wait to continue my life here surrounded by the people I love!

Opening the café three years ago, I would have never imagined how quickly it has grown in such a short period of time. I feel so lucky to have a spot for people to come enjoy a quick fresh meal with their families, friends, and/or coworkers. Glens Falls has been so good to me and my business. I truly wouldn't be where I am without the constant support from our local customers.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

When I have a day off, I love starting my mornings with a good workout.  Spin classes at our local YMCA are my favorite, and I also love going to Yoga at Hot Yoga Queensbury! During this time of the year, I also love seeing what winter activities our area has to offer. Whether it’s the annual tree lighting right in downtown, or a fun day spent at West Mountain, there is always something fun and exciting to do in the Glens Falls area (even on the cold days!).

I always love getting together with family and friends and trying out all of the new and upcoming restaurants in the area. But, one of my all time favorite places to go for lunch/dinner is Siam Thai. You can never go wrong with their sushi rolls! Another local place I love is Downtown Social. It’s such a unique and modern spot to grab some cocktails with your friends, and listen to some live music! It’s definitely a place you don't want to miss!

On the Future

In the future, I see myself growing as a business owner and creating an even better atmosphere for my customers. I see Glens Falls expanding into an even more beautiful and unique town, and I am so thankful to be a part of it!

Thanks Kelly!

My Glens Falls: Christy Alexander

This week we’re chatting with Christy Alexander! You’ve most certainly seen her around downtown, at WorkSmart, or even in this recent Times Union article! Read on to find out which downtown stores she frequented as a kid (which were probably your favorites, too!), some treasured memories made raising her children here, and her go-to lunch spot when she steps away from her desk.

Christy Alexander Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I am Christy Alexander. I own WorkSmart, a coworking and meeting space in downtown Glens Falls, but my most treasured role is mother to my three children. When I am not spending time with my children or with the community members at WorkSmart you’ll find me running, biking with friends or paddle boarding on Lake George.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in this area and raised my family here. With so many parks and playgrounds within walking distance, seasonal events like the Adirondack Balloon Festival and its proximity to Lake George, Glens Falls has been a fantastic place for my family to grow up. I now have a home in Queensbury where I am close enough to ride my bike to work and I can be on the lake in less than twenty minutes!

One of my favorite things about Glens Falls is its walkability. When I was younger, I would walk downtown to Woolworth’s and the Boston Candy Kitchen with my great grandmother. Now, being located in a walkable city is a great asset for those of us building our businesses within WorkSmart. Walking has become an important part of our workdays, whether to grab lunch, go to the bank or just gain a fresh perspective on our business projects.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day? First, it would be a warm, summer day. I would begin with a run through the city streets and along the Feeder Canal path ending at the Glens Falls YMCA where I would swim a few laps. Next I would head over to join the buzz of activity and conversation at WorkSmart. We would celebrate a win that resulted from a collaboration between members and get caught up in sharing visions for success in our latest ventures. My family will then meet me for lunch on the patio at Doc’s Restaurant. We would spend the afternoon on Lake George swimming and playing around on our paddle boards and kayaks. Following an afternoon of hot sun and fun on the water we would finish the day together with dinner at Siam Thai. I love their fresh rolls and pad thai!

On the Past

My most treasured memories in Glens Falls include time spent with my children. There was never a shortage of activities offered for children and families at the Hyde Museum, the Chapman Museum and the neighborhood schools. In the summer we often walked to Crandall Library, biked to Cooper’s Cave for ice cream and had picnics at the playground in Crandall Park.

In the winter I always looked forward to bundling everyone up on the evening of the first snowfall. We would take a walk through the crisp, white, newly fallen snow as flakes continued to fall on our faces. When the children were young, they were pulled on sleds and when they got older, we were dodging each other’s snowballs.

On the Future

I recently visited the Chapman Museum’s “Building Stories” exhibit, and I was struck by the vitality of the streets in old photographs of Glens Falls. It’s an energy that is coming back to our little city. You can see it in the new restaurants and boutiques, you can see it in the investments being made to bring old properties back to life, and I hope to be part of this revitalization by bringing together the talent and energy of entrepreneurs and independent workers downtown at WorkSmart.

If I could wave a magic wand, I would wish for continued momentum in downtown Glens Falls. The store fronts would be filled with interesting shops and open into the evening alongside the restaurants. This may seem like a dream but there are a lot of great people in the region who are working to make this happen, so I wouldn’t bet against it.

My Glens Falls: Rachel Meacher

This week we caught up with Rachel Meacher! We were psyched to hear she’s just opened a new cycling studio downtown (which we need to try out before we overload on holiday desserts!). Read on to find out her go-to picks for dinner and a cocktail, a favorite workout (other than cycling!) and the one thing she’d like to see in Glens Falls in the future.

Rachel Meacher Kind Cycling Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

My name’s Rachel, and I’m the owner and instructor at the newly opened Kind Cycling Studio in downtown Glens Falls. I’m a wife, mother, world-adventurer, avid cyclist, group exercise instructor, and personal trainer. You may recognize me as your waitress from a handful of local restaurants, or maybe you once took my class at the Glens Falls YMCA. Every spring and summer I offer a free community HIIT class on the bandstand in Crandall Park. This year will be its tenth year running!

On Life in Glens Falls

I’m originally from a small town in the Hudson Valley region, but Glens Falls has been my home since I graduated in 2007. As a newcomer to the area, I instantly fell in love. It’s such a charming little city, with the kindest people around. I’ve tried living other places — my husband and I have lived in the Virgin Islands and Costa Rica. Even paradise doesn’t compare to good old Hometown USA. We love our apartment on the outskirts of downtown. We have great neighbors and are just a short walk away from everything we love to do.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day? That’s a tough one! I’d kick off my day with my Rise & Kind class at 6AM. It’s such a feel-good way to start the day! After class, I’d get my coffee fix at Spot or Spektor, followed by breakfast with my family at Juicin’ Jar. I love that they offer light, healthy options! I’d digest a little before heading over to the Cool Insuring Arena to run the stairs. If you’re looking for a really good workout, that’s my other go-to. A walking membership is only $10 a year! After that, I’d take my 5 year old son, Atlas, to the library. He loves the playroom and the super friendly library staff. We’d pick some books for him to read in the bike trailer, before heading up the bike path for an easy afternoon ride. After all that exercise, it’d be Mikado on my mind. My husband and I love their new space and the awesome sushi! Last stop would be at the Park Theater for a nightcap at Doc’s restaurant. The “prescription” cocktails are unique and delicious. Sipping on one at the candlelit bar makes me feel just a little bit more glamorous.

On the Future

If I could add anything to the Glens Falls area, it’d be a health-oriented grocery store like the Healthy Living Market or maybe a Whole Foods. One of our daily activities includes a trip to the grocery store; often in which we have to drive to Saratoga to find what we’re looking for. I’d love to keep those dollars more local.

Oh, by the Way…

Thank you for taking a moment and allowing me to introduce myself. I hope you’ll become one of the Kind, and join me for a ride soon! To check out my class schedule, class descriptions, or reserve your ride, you can visit www.KindCyclingStudio.com. You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

My Glens Falls: Jeremy Deason

This week we caught up with Jeremy Deason! He and his wife Cassie were among the first friendly faces we met when we moved to Glens Falls years ago. Find out what brought him here, what he loves about working downtown, and his go-to brunch and pizza spots (a couple of our favorites!).

Jeremy Deason Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Jeremy Deason, and I am an Account Executive at Associates of Glens Falls Insurance. I live locally with my wife Cassie and our seven year old twins. I’m on the Glens Falls School Board, am a coach in local youth recreational sports, and I volunteer for both the State Basketball Tournament Committee and the YMCA.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born in Michigan and grew up in Atlanta, GA, but attended college in upstate New York. I met my wife (a Glens Falls native) in college, and I always enjoyed coming to visit the area. After living in Massachusetts after college, life intervened, and we moved back to the area about 10 years ago. We love this place, love that we have four seasons, and love the community. Glens Falls has pride and grit, things you don’t get in a big city, and traits we are happy to have ingrained in our kids. We are also so lucky to live in a neighborhood where we walk to school every day. Even better, the kids can head outside and, at any moment, be playing with a number of kids, all within a few blocks. I am also fortunate that my "commute" is about a mile, and I really enjoy working downtown. It's rewarding to be a part of a locally owned business (look for the clock!) that has been in Glens Falls for over 50 years and is an active part of our community. One thing I've become aware of working downtown is that if you only go downtown on nights or weekends, you wouldn't know that a bustle and flow really does exist during the weekday days. It's refreshing to work in an area that is both busy and inviting at the same time.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect GF day could be any time of the year, but since it's the fall, it would probably start with a Rec Soccer game in the morning, playing with neighbors or a bike ride, and then dinner at Raul's followed by a drink or two at Fenimore's (or sitting at the outside fire pits at The Q). For breakfast/brunch we love Kelly's Roots, and you can’t beat a pizza for dinner and seeing friends at Talk of the Town! Crandall Library is also a must visit for us most weeks.

On the Past

While I didn't grow up here, many Glens Falls moments have become a part of my life. One of my favorite times of year is the State Basketball Tournament. Having played basketball in college in New York, so many people talk with such fond memories of coming to our community for those few days, and remark how welcoming Glens Falls is. It feels much better that it’s back in its rightful place this year.

On the Future

Selfishly I'd love a place to have a good deli sandwich downtown, but overall, it's nice to see downtown transforming each day. I truly do feel like good things are happening.

We have friends and family who live in places like Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, and while it's great to visit with them, we wouldn't trade Glens Falls and Hometown USA for the world. I'm incredibly grateful that Cassie and I met in college and we ended up here to settle and raise our family.

Thanks Jeremy!

My Glens Falls: Lisa Boucher

This week we chatted with Lisa Boucher! Read on to find out why the City Park bandstand is so special to her (the sweetest story!), what inspired her to get into the field of Human Resources, and what hobbies keep her busy when she finds some spare time.

Lisa Boucher Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi - My name is Lisa Boucher and I am the HR Director at Double H Ranch as well as Vice-President and Co-Owner of Women in Networking Connect, Inc. (WINC). WINC is a social and professional networking group of women empowering women. Our mission is to offer women a place to connect, share and grow. We are true believers in empowering each other and “strength in numbers!” Our passion is to inspire and empower women to pursue their true passions in life.

My hobbies include teaching Tae Kwon Do classes and women’s self defense classes for over 20 years as part of Murray’s Family Martial Arts in Hudson Falls.  There is something about empowering a woman to feel she can protect herself or her family that I cannot begin to describe. My husband and I also truck and tractor pull together and travel all over New York State and have gone as far as Ohio to compete!  I just love the noise of a big motor and the excitement of the competition! I also love the freedom of traveling in our motorhome and stopping at places along the way to just camp out for the night.

My life’s passion has been about empowering others to live their best lives and be the best they can at whatever their heart leads them to. I got into Human Resources as I saw it as a way to help employees be more productive and happy at work, while at the same time helping the organization retain and coach good employees for longevity. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone succeed and be happy coming to work every day. It’s ironic that I ended up at Double H Ranch as my cousin was one of the very first campers there and I feel like I’m able to give back to an organization that gave so much to our family. (I don’t believe in coincidence though - I believe everything happens for a reason!)

When my closest friend and business partner, Cristine DiCaprio, approached me at about starting WINC I was all in. To provide a way for local business women to connect and thrive through an all women’s networking group was really exciting to me. Being able to impact local small businesses and families through such a fun and inspiring venture has been so rewarding and I cannot begin to list the amazing things we’ve seen happen through this group.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born and raised in South Glens Falls and have always loved the Glens Falls area. We have some fun city events, like plays at the Wood Theater, concerts at the Cool Insuring Arena, the Adirondack Balloon Fest, as well as amazing countryside to tour and live in. It’s really the best of both worlds in my opinion!

I live in Kingsbury with my husband Jeff, and our 4 rescue kitties, Buddy, Maggie, Jack and Chloe. My husband and I both have chosen to live and work in this area because we love the change of seasons and the diversity of the area. Our families also still live in the area and we love to be near them and spend time with them. I cannot imagine living more than 15 to 20 minutes away from my parents!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect day in Glens Falls to me would start with breakfast at The Exchange Cafe, hitting the local farmers market, lunch at Samantha’s Cafe, shopping the great local shops downtown, and then ending the evening with a great country concert at the Cool Insuring Arena with dinner at Davidson Brothers! (I may like to eat just a little too much and there are so many great places downtown it’s hard to choose just one!)

On the Past

One of my fondest and favorite memories of Glens Falls is Christmas Eve 1998. My husband and I had been dating for about a year and he knew I just love to see the band stand at City Park all lit up for Christmas. After an evening of family parties, he stopped downtown on Ridge Street at about 11 p.m. and told me to get out of the truck. I thought I’d done something wrong but did it anyway even though it was super cold and snowy out! He took my hand and led me through the snow to the bandstand and stood me in front of the Christmas tree. He then handed me a box and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was the most romantic thing ever!

On the Future

I cannot imagine anything I’d change about living in the Glens Falls area! It’s why we’ve chosen to stay here all these years! I have to say that seeing the city come back to life over the last few years has been so awesome. The vibrancy and diversity that we are seeing happen makes me happy to be a part of the community. I cannot wait to see what else is to come!

Thanks Lisa!

My Glens Falls: Herman Johnson

We caught up with Herman Johnson this week! Keep reading to find out what brought him back to Glens Falls after spending years away, some favorite Glens Falls memories, and a few of his favorite spots in the city.

Herman Johnson

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Herman Johnson, I’m the president of Cerebral Sports, a coach at Glens Falls High School, an Instructor at SUNY Adirondack, and a Radio Host on 1450 WWSC AM. I have three daughters who reside in Washington State. I am married to a wonderful woman, Caroline Johnson, who has a son and a young lady attending SUNY Potsdam. I enjoy helping those who cannot help themselves.

On Life in Glens Falls

I am back in Glens Falls after spending many years away. After graduating from Glens Falls High and attending the University of Jamestown in North Dakota, I came back home to work at the Nautilus which was located just across the street from the Civic Center, now the Cool Insuring Arena.

Upon leaving Glens Falls, my family and I moved to Lewiston, Idaho for 12 years, where I taught and coached, and then from Idaho to Washington State where we lived for 22 years and I continued teaching, coaching and doing triggerpoint therapy.

A divorce got me saying to myself, it's time to return home, and so here I am and am so excited to be here, staying here forever.

My mom, who lives in South Glens Falls now and still drives at 90 years old, moved from Alabama in the early 50s. I have 4 sisters, Remona, Maureen, Joslyn, and Bridget and 2 brothers, Lamont and Jeffrey.

My wife Caroline is from Redhook area and her son is Michael and a beautiful daughter, Victoria.

We rent a very beautiful older home on South Street Extension. Caroline and I enjoy the quiet and quick stroll to Haviland Cove. We do not have to commute, which is the beauty of residing here.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is that I grew up with the majority of the long time residents here and it's so nice to see how they have become successful and generous and are comfortable in their own skin - and everyone can love that, can't they?

I wish more people would explore seasonal activities that abound throughout the region, especially the excellent cuisine assembled with fresh ingredients within walking distance of each other.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

An ideal day comes in many forms - like, in the middle of winter, when we have piles of snow and the streets are clear and there is lots of sunshine - taking a trip to West Mountain Ski Resort and observing the symphony of skiers.

It could be the eventual saunter into the library to read and enjoy the glass enclosure, watching humans and animals strolling by in all kinds of weather.

I’ve never met a calorie I didn't like, but all my closest breakfast nooks deliver a breakfast that's to die for, seriously. I can't single out a particular restaurant because I give praises to all of them when I meet people from out of town. Is it obvious I'm in love with the area?

On the Past

My favorite memory is growing up in the city, having been a part of this great school system and having a school record in the triple jump which afforded me the ability to attend the University. Or sitting in the library reading 24 volumes of Sigmund Freud and 18 volumes of Carl Gustave Jung - love psychology.

Another indelible impression was going to Poopie's when I was 10 years old and getting an egg sandwich with ketchup. I haven't had that sandwich in a great while however, I always enjoy having the delicious hashbrowns.

On the Future

The future of Glens Falls is evolving as we speak because since returning home, many things are happening. I'm loving the leadership of Mayor Hall. The momentum picked up by expanding the Farmer's Market, and many developers have renovated and have beautified South Street and Glen Street is transitioning into a corridor of shops and eateries and as is Ridge, Park, Hudson and many others - kudos to the entrepreneurs! I am hopeful that the people of Glens Falls participate in the growth and transformation of this great city because without their involvement, it is only a dream.

My personal dream is to have people steer more towards Holistic Health, spread the love. Many, many praises to the individual practitioners in the field of Holistic Medicine.

My Glens Falls: John Marcantonio

This week we’re catching up with John Marcantonio. You might recognize John from his role with Glens Falls National Bank, from his days with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, or his dedicated volunteerism locally. Read on to learn more about John’s ties to the city, a little known fact about him, and a cause near and dear to his heart.

John Marcantonio

Tell us about yourself!

My name is John Marcantonio and I am a Business Development Officer for Glens Falls National Bank and volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association. A little known fact about me is that last year I became an Adirondack 46er which I’m extremely proud of. I am a lifelong resident of the Glens Falls region and love that my son is growing up in the place I call home. My son is an athlete in baseball and hockey which translates to me being a coach in those sports. I love being involved and making a difference in the lives of others.

On Life in Glens Falls

Growing up in South Glens Falls was a great experience. When I was a kid, I loved all of the local attractions but didn't appreciate all that we have. I was able to attend a great college locally at SUNY Adirondack and then went on to SUNY Utica. After college, I couldn't wait to see what the world had to offer and moved to Syracuse to further my career. After a few years in Syracuse, I realized what a special place Glens Falls is and moved home. I bought a two family house on Ridge Street when I was 25 and loved fixing that house up with my Dad and friends. I enjoyed living in downtown Glens Falls and all that it had to offer within walking distance. This is a very special place that allows us the opportunity to enjoy world class vacation destinations and still have that small town living. I couldn't imagine a better community to raise my son. My wife Shelly and I bought the house I grew up in when my Dad passed away 11 years ago and I built an addition and remodeled to make it our own.

My family is from Glens Falls, my Mom was an RN at Glens Falls Hospital for decades and helped care for many families in this community. My Dad was a famous semi-pro baseball player for the Glens Falls Doblers where he enjoyed playing with his brothers and friends. I love running into folks in town that share their stories about my parents. That is the charm of small town living.

The amazing thing about this community is the philanthropic spirit. Whether big or small, the way that this community rallies together is amazing. We have all witnessed the power of the South High Marathon Dance and what an amazing opportunity it is to educate our youth on the impact they can have to make the world a better place.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is watching the city constantly evolve. This is a city on the rise. The dining options that we have for a small town are incredible. I love going to the Bullpen, as a young guy it was one of the best bars to hang out in, but now the little known secret...and this might make it harder for me to get in…the food that Pam and her staff serve for lunch and dinner is incredible. To watch and be a part of the redevelopment of all of the old buildings into thriving businesses in downtown is awesome!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A great day here for me would include getting a coffee at SPOT and then heading to Crandall Library to grab a few books for my son. Then I’d do a quick hike up Sleeping Beauty, dinner at Gourmet Café and then an Adirondack Thunder hockey game.

On a Personal Note

The reason that I am so passionate about Glens Falls is a very personal one. I was blessed to work at the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce for five years. During that time I met a lot of great people that make this community special and I also lived through a personal tragedy. My Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease nine years ago. She was a resident of Cronin High Rise at the time, some of you will remember the little hunched over lady that walked the streets of downtown for years (that was my Mom). I had the pleasure of working downtown and knowing all of the business owners, and so many of them helped me keep an eye on my Mom and let her live independently for as long as possible. Eventually her condition worsened and she moved to a memory care unit at The Landing in Queensbury. Alzheimer's eventually took her memory and then her life. As her primary caregiver, that journey with Alzheimer's was devastating for me and my family but it also led to inspiration. I got involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer's and soon after was nominated to be Co-Chair of the committee. I am so proud to report that in the last four years that event has become one of the top fundraisers in the Capital Region. Last year we had over 1,000 walkers and raised over $165,000. The money raised goes to fund research to make sure that future generations will have treatment and cure, and also funds caregiver support in our community for those that are diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's. Please join us on October 26th at SUNY Adirondack to Walk to End Alzheimer's. Here’s a link for more information.

On the Future

If I could wave a magic wand and change anything about Glens Falls what would it be? Nothing! We live in a geographically superior place that offers everything that you could want. Whatever draws you to this region: mountains, lakes, the horses at Saratoga or something else, you will want to stay or come back because of the wonderful people who live here.

My Glens Falls: Tabitha Burton

This week we’re chatting with Tabitha Burton, who will be a familiar face if you’ve been to the Adirondack Theatre Festival or Film Festival. Read on to find out what brought her to good ol’ GF, what drew her to get involved in theatre, and her local go-to spots for everything from coffee to trivia night.

Tabitha Burton Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hey Glens Falls! I’m Tabitha Burton, but most of you know me by Tab. I’m the Company Manager for the Adirondack Film Festival which runs October 17-20th in downtown Glens Falls.

We’d love to hear more about your background - how did you become involved in theatre?

I got a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (Undergrad) and a Masters of Art in Art Administration (Grad School). I first got involved in theatre when I was in grad school. I had an amazing teacher who would take us to shows and emphasized the importance of live theatre - the story it tells and how everyone can relate to either the story or the characters. I stuck with it after graduation.

I started working at the Shawnee Theatre the day after I graduated high school and worked there for 8 years each summer learning how to do the many different jobs it takes to put on a show. It was Mrs. Jerrells who introduced me to music and theatre and why I fell in love with it. She was an amazing teacher, friend and role model. She retired and now her and her husband work at Disney in Florida.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in a small town similar to Glens Falls in Bloomfield, Indiana. I started working for the Bloomington Playwrights Project Theatre shortly after undergrad where Chad Rabinovitz is the artistic director. I first came to Glens Falls four years ago for the Adirondack Film Festival and fell in love with the community. From there, Chad (who is also the artistic director of the Adirondack Theatre Festival) brought me on as the Company Manager and I kept coming back every October for the Film Festival and every May for the Theatre Festival for the past three years. I fell in love with the downtown area and looked forward to seeing the same familiar faces each year.

Once I graduated from grad school at Indiana University (Go Hoosier!) in December 2017, I decided I wanted to move out of Indiana and move to Glens Falls - I mean, I already knew people and had a community here. Now, I live right downtown at Bemis Place Apartments on Sherman Ave with my sweet cat Calvin that I adopted at the local Glens Falls Animal Shelter and couldn’t be happier.

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the different art events the community has - from the LARAC Festival, Adirondack Theatre and Film Festivals to the Black Fly event at the Hyde, there is so much going on. I also love the small town feel, it’s a nice feeling to go into a restaurant or bar and people know your name (shout out to Fenimores at the Q!).

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

Some of my favorite spots to frequent downtown are definitely Spot Coffee for that Java Shake, the patio at The Q for their firepits, Rauls for the best margs in town, or trivia night at Mean Max. There is something for everyone downtown.

On the Future

If you asked me where I would be living 4 yrs ago, Glens Falls wouldn’t have even been on the radar. I wouldn’t even have known about Glens Falls if it wasn’t for Chad. Indiana will always hold a special place in my heart, but for now Glens Falls has won me over and my heart.

By the way…

The fourth annual Adirondack Film Festival is Oct 17-20th. If you find yourself downtown, buy a pass and come check out our amazing line up. We have over 200 filmmakers coming to town, so it’s going to be a busy but exciting weekend.

My Glens Falls: Michael DuBray

This week we’re chatting with Michael DuBray! A popular local radio host and familiar voice to many, we’re sure you’ve also seen him at events downtown and all around the region. Find out a bit more about him including what brought him to Glens Falls, what he loves most about his career in radio, and the movie that he’s reminded of most when strolling downtown (so true!).

Michael DuBray

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Michael DuBray, I'm the midday host on Regional Radio's station 98.5 WCKM.  I am also an account representative and the guy at the studios that everyone calls when there is a computer or satellite issue, so when I'm not on the air I'm always occupied with station business of some sort.  I am also the owner of DeeJay DuBray. You may have seen me at a trivia night, a downtown Glens Falls event, fundraiser or wedding at one time or another. Outside of work, I have been involved with many organizations. I was Exalted Ruler of the Glens Falls Elks Lodge for 3 terms, I'm an ambassador for the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, I was a celebrity dancer for Adirondack Dancing with the Stars to benefit CWI, I have been the chairman of the Glens Falls Collaborative's Wingfest the past few years and I am currently embracing my new appointment as president of the Glens Falls Kiwanis Club.

A few of the things I love about being a radio personality all come down to the same result: making a difference. I love watching a business grow due to a great commercial and schedule. Playing a certain song brings back memories and can really change someone's day. My favorite thing is helping people. Last week I learned about two cheerleaders from Queensbury that were trying to raise money for a very important trip. I was able to help by getting the info on the air for them. That's a pretty powerful ability.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Cropseyville, New York. My family is scattered from the Troy area to Glens Falls. When I was a young child, my parents drove me to WGY live broadcasts where Harry Downey and Don Weeks would almost always put me on the air. In middle school, I made friends with Lee Warner from WGFM. He would put me on the air very frequently and as you probably guessed, I had the dream of being a radio personality growing in my heart. I moved in with my father in the Saratoga area after graduation and enrolled at ACC for Radio and TV Broadcasting. Within a year, I was the overnight host on WWSC and shortly after became the Traffic and Office Manager with a midday shift. That's when I moved to Glens Falls.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I love summer Saturdays in Glens Falls. My favorite thing to do is start out at the Farmer's Market, where we grab some fresh chocolate milk and some vegetables. We then cross the street and have breakfast at Peter's Diner. I've been going there for 25 years. After that, if there is an event in downtown Glens Falls we usually go to the event, many times because I'm part of the event.

A Glens Falls Favorite

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the hometown feeling. Many times near the holidays, I'll be walking in the snow downtown, wearing my long jacket and carrying my briefcase. Ten to fifteen people will walk by and say, "Hi Mike, Happy Holidays!". It almost makes me feel like I'm George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life". That is why I love it here. There is no better hometown feeling than that.

On the Past

I have many fond memories from my early days of living here. Most of them are the friendships that started way back then and lasted my entire life until now. College friends that I still talk to, dear friends that are gone such as Bruce Matthews and Vince Desantis, plus the hundreds of friends that can't all be mentioned. Business wise, I miss E. Gillis, The Ground Round and I think we all will miss Sandy's.

On the Future

As downtown Glens Falls continues to grow, I would like to see more people get involved in the organizations and events. We have many great non-profits and service organizations in our area that need volunteers and fresh ideas. Although I love seeing the same dedicated familiar faces, others are missing out on the satisfaction of the difference they could make.

Thanks, Michael!

My Glens Falls: Carol Ann Conover

This week, we talked with Carol Ann Conover, who you might recognize from The Queensbury Hotel! We loved hearing how she found her way to Glens Falls having grown up in New Jersey, how she’s made her house a home, and how she’d spend her perfect day in our little city.

Carol Ann Conover Glens Falls, NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! I'm Carol Ann Conover…you might know me as one of several Star-tender bartenders at The Queensbury Hotel (The #QCrew as we are otherwise known, mainly in the newly renovated Fenimore's Neighborhood Pub, but sometimes you can find me in Park 26 or keeping the party going at an event in one of our many banquet rooms). Working at The Q is just my super-hero secret undercover identity, though.... in my secret life, I'm a writer and social media & marketing specialist which I've been doing for over a decade. In fact, I've had to pleasure to work with many small businesses in town here over the years and it's helped me really forge some lasting friendships with some wonderful people.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born and raised in New Jersey...South Jersey to be exact, and believe me, the distinction is important! There is a diagonal line from right around Trenton across to the shore near Toms River that separates North Jersey and South Jersey where, north of that line, you call it Taylor Ham and are a Giants fan (incredulous!), while in South Jersey, we call it by it's proper name 'Pork Roll' and are bleeding-green EAGLES FANS!

My hometown is all woods and beaches and farmland and quite a nice place to grow up. I used to shred these Upstate NY mountains on my hot pink on black Rossignol 165's with my high school Ski Team, so I had a connection to the area before I moved here 6 years ago.

From Jersey, I moved to Fort Lauderdale in the spring of 2001. One of the first friends I made in Florida (Hi Jimmy!) grew up in Clifton Park and his family had a camp in Brant Lake. When I was melting from the oppressive heat of summer, he invited me up to stay with his family so I started making visits once or twice a summer and fell in love with the area all over again as an adult. I found such peace in the mountains and by the lake. Once, I decided to make one of my trips in September for my birthday and I got a taste of Autumn that I hadn't had in 12 years and I realized how much I missed it. Then, that Christmas, I found out my sister was having another baby and it was so hard to get on a plane and leave the first one, there was no way I'd be able to bear leaving two of them, so I started to make plans to return to the northeast. I mentioned it to a Brant Lake friend (Hi Jess!) who lovingly offered me use of her cabin as a place to land to help navigate all the job and apartment finding stuff that can be so difficult to do from 1500 miles away, and it was life-changing. As with all the big decisions of my life, all I did was set my heart toward what I wanted to do and the path just suddenly cleared, the next swinging vine to grab presented itself, and so I had no doubt it's where I belonged. I couldn't be happier to have chosen Glens Falls as my home.

I just bought a house in Glens Falls, a sweet little two-story built in 1896 on the north side of town. The house had been updated a lot by the previous owner (who also happens to be one of my closest friends and former manager at The Queensbury) who put a lot of time and love into making improvements to the house, many of which were to my specifications once we worked out the deal to buy, so it was really very move-in ready as far as older homes go. I've spent a lot of time in the yard, tending and planting and I had a lovely summer with buckets of blackberries that grow on bushes right out back that everyone told me were roses! Next year, the perennials that I put in will really take off and I have the layout all finished for the straw-bale garden I'll be planting next spring. I made and hung a cute little red swing from the tree out back and my bird feeders are very popular with tons of birds, so I've made a lovely little nature retreat right in my own back yard!

The best thing about my neighborhood really has to be my neighbors on BOTH sides! I really lucked out. They've all been so wonderful and welcoming since I moved in. There have been barbecue invites and afternoons by the pool, dog-sitting and lots of nights chatting on one of our porches with cocktails...oh...and we are all always cooking and baking for each other, and as a true foodie, there couldn't be anything better!

One of the first things I bought for my new home was a salvaged farmhouse plank that reads "It's so good to be home" and it is so very true. I feel that every day living here.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

During my apartment hunt, I looked at a lot of places all the way from Brant Lake down to Ballston Spa to find the place that felt most like home to me. I was lucky to find a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment in a quiet little house just a few blocks from Downtown. When I first made my way down Route 9 onto Glen Street, I noticed the big, beautiful Crandall Library...I'm a super book-nerd so that really grabbed me..then a few doors down, what's this? A THEATER? Love! Oh, look, there's the bank I just opened my accounts with....and all these restaurants and shops! I fell in love with it right away and everything just felt RIGHT....I have always sought out the village sort of lifestyle where everything is within a short walk and Glens Falls sure is a walkabout town. My first weekend living here was the LARAC Craft Festival, and after discovering the Farmer's Market in the pavillion, I felt like Glens Falls really rolled out the red carpet just for me. I was so in love with my new Upstate life and the affair continues 6 years later!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day in Glens Falls would be hitting the Farmer's Market early (which means I'd have a rare Saturday off!) and having a handmade crepe from my dear friends at Dickinson's Delights and saying hello to all my other market friends...I used to work the Farmer's Market circuit with Jon and Tamberlyn and I really love everything about Market life.

Then I'd make my way down to Spektor..my favorite spot for coffee and an occasional breakfast..the beans are roasted to perfection, the place is cozy, the pour-overs are prepared with great care and their chocolate croissants cannot be beat. I'd read and write for awhile and stroll down to Davidson's for a brew and a visit. Dbros was my first job when I moved to town and is really where I made most of my first connections. I had a wonderful experience there and am really thankful for the owners, coworkers and customers who have since become like family to me.

From there, I'd hit DTCT for a little snack to visit my friends who work there, probably breeze through the Bullpen too, since by then a mini-bar crawl would be the order of the day. A nap in my hammock would work it's way in there somewhere.

For night life, I tend to start at The Q (because I just can't stay away!) for a cocktail and some appetizers and move on to Farmacy.. my latest love for small plate dinners.

From there I'd let my ears guide me to some live music that suits my mood as the place to chill for the evening.

There really are just so many options and it's often the case that I'll bump into friends and the day can totally change direction...and I love that about living here! It's a great place to just float on the breeze and see where the day takes you.

On the Past

After living here two years, I almost left Glens Falls to move to Tennessee. Leaving here felt really bittersweet because I had only lived here for a short time and didn't feel like I had enough of it, like I hadn't done enough here yet, but my life was taking me in that direction and I had some connections down there so I was excited about the new opportunity. Then, when that plan abruptly fell through, amidst a lot of shock and heartache, I found myself here in Glens Falls, still, moving back into the apartment that I never left. It was then, in the midst of heartbreak and disappointment that the friends I had made in town really rallied around me...my landlord worked it out so I could stay in my same place, which was an enormous comfort and that's when many of my coworkers and customers crossed over into being something more... and it was then that I knew this place was very special and eventually, as my heart mended, I followed my life-plan to start my own writing business and keep my goals on track, and I've done it all in just a few short years...just, without the guy I thought I'd be with. It was really for the best and I feel thankful, really, that my life kept me here. The friendships and sense of community I've found here have made a tremendous impact on me as a person. I love it here. I love ME here. The town, the people, my job. It really is a wonderful life and I feel lucky to have landed here.

On the Future

A wave of my magic wand would bring my sister and my nephews up here to live. My oldest nephew, Robbie, spends a month every summer with me, which he's been doing for the last 3 years. I think lake-life and mountain living is such a profound and peaceful experience and I'm so happy to be able to share that kind of time with him and my sister and younger nephew when they come to visit. They all love the hotel and The Q is great about everything when family comes to visit...they feel very at home here already and I'd love to have them close enough to ride their bikes to my house and scoop them up for summer movies in the park or at the drive-in, seeing their school plays or concerts and games....and just all that day-to day stuff that I miss being so far away. Also, I'd love a little grocery or market within walking distance. I think it would really complete the wide variety of options this town has to offer.

I think Glens Falls is a great town...a little hidden gem nestled between the more-touristy Lake George and the pricier Saratoga Region. I feel like people who discover us are always really surprised at how beautifully the town is maintained with all our lovely hanging flowers and tended garden beds, and lit-up lamp posts in the winter months. It really is a wonderland in any season with so much to do..and it has a very Gilmore Girls-Stars Hollow type of feel since everybody does ALL the things. Every festival, benefit, craft fair, farmer's market, hockey game....whatever it is, you can be sure to run into friends and see a ton of familiar faces. It's really a unique and wonderful thing.

My Glens Falls: Rodney Allen Bentley

Tonight we’re catching up with Rodney Allen Bentley! You’re sure to have seen his artwork all around town, and we’re excited to share our chat with him, including a bit of his history and the catalyst for his amazing artistic journey. Read it all below!

Rodney Allen Bentley

Tell us about yourself!

A native of Glens Falls, I experienced a very successful corporate career for nearly 18 years. I had continual promotions culminating in 5 relocations to 5 major cities. I lost that long career and my last home during the Great Recession. During that turmoil, I suffered a fall at my residence, and Emergency Medical Technicians rushed me to a major hospital Neurological Trauma Unit to stabilize multiple bleeds from a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). I later awoke in the Intensive Care Unit and learned that the severe TBI was the catalyst which called for CAT scans that uncovered previously undiagnosed severe spinal cervical degeneration, which required emergency surgery. I returned to Glens Falls to recover in 2012 and without much idea of what the future would hold.

Fast forward to the present time, I have become an emerging and successful visual artist and my gallery openings are making a mark. My work is admired by  business owners, city leaders, hundreds of home owners in the region as well as children. My architectural artistic renditions were recently gifted to Saga, Japan by the Glens Falls Mayor Delegation visit to the city in 2018.

I now reside at a magnificent property known as the Historical McEchron House, built in 1891. It is better known as the 5 star Morgan and Company Restaurant.  The property has a stunning canopied wrap around porch, exterior bar, dual stone dining patios, brilliant landscaping, evening lighting and the wonderful summer sounds of a New Orleans Jazz Ensemble.

I also now serve on two separate of Board of Directors. Southern Adirondack Independent Festival and Steps for Stroke. Both not for profit agencies have different resources to provide and fill needs to those attempting to live independently. I happily provide many donations of my work for regional fundraising events in the area, including the Festival of Trees at the Queensbury Hotel.

ON LIFE IN GLENS FALLS

It was a Sunday in mid February when I was introduced to a new world at Glens Falls Hospital. I was a first child for my Mother. Her great faith and fortitude would allow my 5 younger siblings and I to be reared within the Adirondacks in the quaint town of Thurman NY. Winters seemed serene, silent, snowy and included lots of sledding and skating. Summer meant swimming on the shores of the Hudson River, exploring the forests, fishing and berry picking. Looking back, the living space with a family of eight was limited so we all contributed to daily chores.

As I graduated SUNY Adirondack, JCPENNEY recruited me and I was provided a successful 18 year career. I liked experiencing new places, new cities, new friends and new homes long the way. Different cultures, ethnicities, cuisine and led to a bigger world calling me. Relocations allowed new homes in cities like Rochester, NYC, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I still follow the Steelers and the Penguins!

Returning to Glens Falls from Philadelphia occurred through the support of my lovely former fiancé Janet, my Mother and my siblings. My compassionate sister Michelle opened her home for me in South Glens Falls. Reading comprehension, speech therapy and aphasia were a few of the obstacles I faced related to the brain injury. A new life was about to begin and evolve in a way much greater than imagined, although I still experienced the darkness of upcoming corridors before the light. Local Neuropsychologist, Dr. Broege provided extensive and lengthy neurocognitive tests evaluating my abilities. I was very hurt, sad and even more confused to learn that I no longer could successfully navigate previous management job responsibilities. I had not yet understood that the creative portion of my brain, after the fall, was unlocked and was raring to go!

One of those dark corridors took me to a place where the spirit began to become present. I was in a controlled environment undergoing treatment and I was approached by a very big man in his forties. He sat down next me and lowered his head and folded his arms.  He was asking if I could draw something for him, a birthday card for his 5 year old grandson. I thought to shrug off the request as it made no sense to me. However, I agreed to make an attempt as I took notice of his emotions and feeling the sincerity of his voice. Paper and pencil were found for use. I sat a few moments looking at empty white space as the pencil began to effortlessly move itself. Not only had I created a wonderful birthday card which a five year old would be proud to have, but I had a nearby audience observing my work with wonder without me being aware. It was then that I knew my most effective way to speak to my new world would be through my hands. Although a long road, I was on my way.

Regardless of the weather, I would begin my early morning trek from South Glens Falls to coffee shops in Glens Falls. Spot Coffee became my home. I would begin creating artwork as the door opened at 7am and many times not leave until 10pm. If I was hungry, I would take advantage of the $1 day old muffins at the shop and I would even trade volunteer time for lunch at the local Soup Kitchen on Lawrence Street.

Spot is where, journey partner, Dr. Karen McShane discovered my passion. Dr. McShane, a volunteer at the Wood Theater and an enormous fan of the arts. Her support of arts goes beyond visual arts. She supports musicals, opera, symphony, film or stage. Her interest in an unknown artist who created artwork at Spot Coffee every day, hour by hour, seven days a week and year after year intrigued her. More local business owners began encouraging my creative process and even publications took interest such as the wonderful Chronicle and Post Star took notice. It would not be long until my work would become artwork hung within local businesses including Davidson Brothers Restaurant and Brewery, The Queensbury Hotel, Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, Adirondack Trust Co., Glen Street Associates, City Hall, Spot Coffee, Wood Theater, Samantha’s Cafe, Lake George Olive Oil Co., and more.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I feel connected to water and I crave biking and find morning trips along the Feeder Canal to Haviland Cove, the canal locks and turbines in Hudson Falls and of course the Warren County Bike Trail to Lake George all inspirational.

I am finding the more that I exercise in moderation, it provides more clarity in my mind and expands my creative process. City Park is beautiful and I truly appreciate the evening summer events. Seeing the morning Tai Chi class on the lush green lawn calms the mind. Evening sunsets are unique and I relish each one. Stepping away from my studio and drafting table lets me connect with the energetic evening soul of Glens Falls. Meeting new and old clients and friends, catching up with local business owners and servers or just feeling the vibrant social atmosphere including Downtown Social, Fenimore’s Pub and Davidson’s Brothers Brewery, just to name a few.

On the Past

Fond childhood memories include South Street and the taste of New Way Lunch “Dirt Dogs”.  Gurney Lane Community Pool and occasionally an evening at the Glen Drive-In on Route 9. Saturdays during summer I would receive five dollars to clean the Catholic Church or rake the lawn in Warrensburg. The five dollars I received were given to my mother to support upcoming school clothing shopping. My first official job came about when I was sixteen years old with the Thurman Highway Department. I mowed grass and “threw” rocks from the many dirt roads in Thurman.  I later would make money before graduating high school at Sitting Bull Ranch Resort and 1000 Acres as a dishwasher, prep cook, waiter and a recreational director.

On the Future

I have had many requests by local friends to write a memoir (which I have started). I have been approached by a few screenwriters that find my experiences  worthwhile and intriguing. I’ve been told to not be overly concerned about writing everyday as each day’s experiences become a new chapter for me to write.

I look forward to bringing an easel and creating new works once the new Farmer’s Market on South Street comes to fruition.

By the way…

For those interested in my work, it can be found here.

Personalized Holiday gift art requests are already pouring in. Whether charcoal holiday theme home renditions, pet portraits, children portraits, family portraits, boats or whatever can be personalized thru an original piece of art and a wonderful gift.

My recent “Adirondack Winterludes” gallery exhibition at Tannery Pond in North Creek was such a huge success that I have had requests to bring the exhibition to the Glens Falls Region. I am very happy to announce that Paula Traina from State Farm is welcoming “Rodney Allen Bentley’s newest Winter Collection” for an opening evening on Friday November 15th, 5pm to 8 pm at 736 Upper Glen Street, Suite 200A, Queensbury NY.

My Glens Falls: Andy Camp

This week we’re chatting with Andy Camp! If you’ve been to an Adirondack Thunder game, you’ve likely seen him - camera in hand! Read on to find out where he got his start as a designer (at a store we all knew and loved!), hear a few of his favorite fall activities, and find out the sweet lunch tradition he carries on with his son.

Andy Camp - My Glens Falls

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Andy Camp, and I have lived and worked in and around Glens Falls my whole life. I met my wife Lisa in high school and we’ve been married for over 26 years. We have two children, Garrett and Delaney and a year-old black lab named Jett. I am the team photographer for the Adirondack Thunder, and work with a number of local businesses as a freelance designer for web and print.

I began my career designing weekly flyers for the Joy Store and then moved on to the design team at Kamyr in 1992. In 1998 I built West Mountain’s first website, completed an update of the City of Glens Falls’ website with Jim Clark and Mayor Bob Regan, and then developed a site for the new hockey team. The web was an exciting new place to work and I grabbed every opportunity I could!

I enjoyed working with the hockey team so much that I’ve been involved with each hockey team to play in Glens Falls since 1999. I even spent a few seasons working with the River Rats in Albany while we waited for a new tenant at the Glens Falls Civic Center. These days you can find me taking pictures at each Thunder game. If you’re at a game – and you really should go if you’ve never been to one - stop and say hello and I’ll take your picture!

On Life in Glens Falls

I’ve been offered chances to move away from the Glens Falls, but something about this area keeps me and my family here. There is a comfort about the people and the places and just a feeling that being here is “just right.” It’s a hard feeling to explain if you haven’t lived here, but you know what I mean if you have.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

While all four seasons bring something special to look forward to, Fall brings our favorites. Hockey season and the Adirondack Balloon Festival are the events that we look forward to the most! We also love to walk around downtown Glens Falls and go the Bullpen, hit the Food Truck Corral at The Shirt Factory, stop at Rob and Deb’s or Martha’s Ice Cream (depending on who gets to pick), pick apples at Hicks Orchard and stock up on the best cider donuts in the area – but our favorite place to go is the Harvest for pizza and French fries!

I’ve seen an amazing transformation of Glens Falls over the years and I am very excited to see it continue. There are more places for families to go, and creative events are bringing more people into the City than ever before. This year we went to events like Take-a-Bite, performances at the Wood Theater (especially Dancing with the Adirondack Stars show that my wife Lisa was in!), Glens Falls Dragons baseball and Thunder Hockey games. We saw so many people enjoying them with us, it was awesome! Glens Falls used to be called “The City on the Rise” and I strongly believe that this is true once again.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

The perfect day would start with a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a blueberry bagel at Lox of Bagels and Moor in Queensbury. They make your order right in front of you, so you know it’s fresh!  A round of golf would be next, followed by a visit to New Way Lunch and then off to work at a Hockey Game. I am excited to go to each game as Thunder fans are second to none! Make no mistake that while they are the most avid fans in the league, they are the friendliest and create a family atmosphere that you won’t find at any other arena. After the game, we like to celebrate a win at the Bullpen where we are likely to see players or fans there to wrap-up a great night!

On the Past

Growing up, my grandfather would take me golfing whenever he could. No matter where we played, we always finished up having lunch at “Dirty John’s” (a.k.a. New Way Lunch). I loved going there with him and looked forward to the loaded hot dogs and a 10 ounce Pepsi. I miss my grandfather and our golf and lunch outings and this is a memory of him and Glens Falls that I cherish. My son and I go as often as we can and we continue the tradition of lunch after golf in his memory.

On the Future

I wish I could make the city bigger, with more of the same qualities of the people and places that we already have. I love it here, and it’s not only because of our location, but more importantly because of the people. The people of Glens Falls and the surrounding area are the reason that we have all of the great places and events that we enjoy. We are a generous and very creative community that support each other in so many ways. What could be better than more Glens Falls?
