My Glens Falls: Michael DuBray

This week we’re chatting with Michael DuBray! A popular local radio host and familiar voice to many, we’re sure you’ve also seen him at events downtown and all around the region. Find out a bit more about him including what brought him to Glens Falls, what he loves most about his career in radio, and the movie that he’s reminded of most when strolling downtown (so true!).

Michael DuBray

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Michael DuBray, I'm the midday host on Regional Radio's station 98.5 WCKM.  I am also an account representative and the guy at the studios that everyone calls when there is a computer or satellite issue, so when I'm not on the air I'm always occupied with station business of some sort.  I am also the owner of DeeJay DuBray. You may have seen me at a trivia night, a downtown Glens Falls event, fundraiser or wedding at one time or another. Outside of work, I have been involved with many organizations. I was Exalted Ruler of the Glens Falls Elks Lodge for 3 terms, I'm an ambassador for the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, I was a celebrity dancer for Adirondack Dancing with the Stars to benefit CWI, I have been the chairman of the Glens Falls Collaborative's Wingfest the past few years and I am currently embracing my new appointment as president of the Glens Falls Kiwanis Club.

A few of the things I love about being a radio personality all come down to the same result: making a difference. I love watching a business grow due to a great commercial and schedule. Playing a certain song brings back memories and can really change someone's day. My favorite thing is helping people. Last week I learned about two cheerleaders from Queensbury that were trying to raise money for a very important trip. I was able to help by getting the info on the air for them. That's a pretty powerful ability.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Cropseyville, New York. My family is scattered from the Troy area to Glens Falls. When I was a young child, my parents drove me to WGY live broadcasts where Harry Downey and Don Weeks would almost always put me on the air. In middle school, I made friends with Lee Warner from WGFM. He would put me on the air very frequently and as you probably guessed, I had the dream of being a radio personality growing in my heart. I moved in with my father in the Saratoga area after graduation and enrolled at ACC for Radio and TV Broadcasting. Within a year, I was the overnight host on WWSC and shortly after became the Traffic and Office Manager with a midday shift. That's when I moved to Glens Falls.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I love summer Saturdays in Glens Falls. My favorite thing to do is start out at the Farmer's Market, where we grab some fresh chocolate milk and some vegetables. We then cross the street and have breakfast at Peter's Diner. I've been going there for 25 years. After that, if there is an event in downtown Glens Falls we usually go to the event, many times because I'm part of the event.

A Glens Falls Favorite

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the hometown feeling. Many times near the holidays, I'll be walking in the snow downtown, wearing my long jacket and carrying my briefcase. Ten to fifteen people will walk by and say, "Hi Mike, Happy Holidays!". It almost makes me feel like I'm George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life". That is why I love it here. There is no better hometown feeling than that.

On the Past

I have many fond memories from my early days of living here. Most of them are the friendships that started way back then and lasted my entire life until now. College friends that I still talk to, dear friends that are gone such as Bruce Matthews and Vince Desantis, plus the hundreds of friends that can't all be mentioned. Business wise, I miss E. Gillis, The Ground Round and I think we all will miss Sandy's.

On the Future

As downtown Glens Falls continues to grow, I would like to see more people get involved in the organizations and events. We have many great non-profits and service organizations in our area that need volunteers and fresh ideas. Although I love seeing the same dedicated familiar faces, others are missing out on the satisfaction of the difference they could make.

My Glens Falls: Carol Ann Conover

This week, we talked with Carol Ann Conover, who you might recognize from The Queensbury Hotel! We loved hearing how she found her way to Glens Falls having grown up in New Jersey, how she’s made her house a home, and how she’d spend her perfect day in our little city.

Carol Ann Conover Glens Falls, NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! I'm Carol Ann Conover…you might know me as one of several Star-tender bartenders at The Queensbury Hotel (The #QCrew as we are otherwise known, mainly in the newly renovated Fenimore's Neighborhood Pub, but sometimes you can find me in Park 26 or keeping the party going at an event in one of our many banquet rooms). Working at The Q is just my super-hero secret undercover identity, though.... in my secret life, I'm a writer and social media & marketing specialist which I've been doing for over a decade. In fact, I've had to pleasure to work with many small businesses in town here over the years and it's helped me really forge some lasting friendships with some wonderful people.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born and raised in New Jersey...South Jersey to be exact, and believe me, the distinction is important! There is a diagonal line from right around Trenton across to the shore near Toms River that separates North Jersey and South Jersey where, north of that line, you call it Taylor Ham and are a Giants fan (incredulous!), while in South Jersey, we call it by it's proper name 'Pork Roll' and are bleeding-green EAGLES FANS!

My hometown is all woods and beaches and farmland and quite a nice place to grow up. I used to shred these Upstate NY mountains on my hot pink on black Rossignol 165's with my high school Ski Team, so I had a connection to the area before I moved here 6 years ago.

From Jersey, I moved to Fort Lauderdale in the spring of 2001. One of the first friends I made in Florida (Hi Jimmy!) grew up in Clifton Park and his family had a camp in Brant Lake. When I was melting from the oppressive heat of summer, he invited me up to stay with his family so I started making visits once or twice a summer and fell in love with the area all over again as an adult. I found such peace in the mountains and by the lake. Once, I decided to make one of my trips in September for my birthday and I got a taste of Autumn that I hadn't had in 12 years and I realized how much I missed it. Then, that Christmas, I found out my sister was having another baby and it was so hard to get on a plane and leave the first one, there was no way I'd be able to bear leaving two of them, so I started to make plans to return to the northeast. I mentioned it to a Brant Lake friend (Hi Jess!) who lovingly offered me use of her cabin as a place to land to help navigate all the job and apartment finding stuff that can be so difficult to do from 1500 miles away, and it was life-changing. As with all the big decisions of my life, all I did was set my heart toward what I wanted to do and the path just suddenly cleared, the next swinging vine to grab presented itself, and so I had no doubt it's where I belonged. I couldn't be happier to have chosen Glens Falls as my home.

I just bought a house in Glens Falls, a sweet little two-story built in 1896 on the north side of town. The house had been updated a lot by the previous owner (who also happens to be one of my closest friends and former manager at The Queensbury) who put a lot of time and love into making improvements to the house, many of which were to my specifications once we worked out the deal to buy, so it was really very move-in ready as far as older homes go. I've spent a lot of time in the yard, tending and planting and I had a lovely summer with buckets of blackberries that grow on bushes right out back that everyone told me were roses! Next year, the perennials that I put in will really take off and I have the layout all finished for the straw-bale garden I'll be planting next spring. I made and hung a cute little red swing from the tree out back and my bird feeders are very popular with tons of birds, so I've made a lovely little nature retreat right in my own back yard!

The best thing about my neighborhood really has to be my neighbors on BOTH sides! I really lucked out. They've all been so wonderful and welcoming since I moved in. There have been barbecue invites and afternoons by the pool, dog-sitting and lots of nights chatting on one of our porches with cocktails...oh...and we are all always cooking and baking for each other, and as a true foodie, there couldn't be anything better!

One of the first things I bought for my new home was a salvaged farmhouse plank that reads "It's so good to be home" and it is so very true. I feel that every day living here.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

During my apartment hunt, I looked at a lot of places all the way from Brant Lake down to Ballston Spa to find the place that felt most like home to me. I was lucky to find a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment in a quiet little house just a few blocks from Downtown. When I first made my way down Route 9 onto Glen Street, I noticed the big, beautiful Crandall Library...I'm a super book-nerd so that really grabbed me..then a few doors down, what's this? A THEATER? Love! Oh, look, there's the bank I just opened my accounts with....and all these restaurants and shops! I fell in love with it right away and everything just felt RIGHT....I have always sought out the village sort of lifestyle where everything is within a short walk and Glens Falls sure is a walkabout town. My first weekend living here was the LARAC Craft Festival, and after discovering the Farmer's Market in the pavillion, I felt like Glens Falls really rolled out the red carpet just for me. I was so in love with my new Upstate life and the affair continues 6 years later!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day in Glens Falls would be hitting the Farmer's Market early (which means I'd have a rare Saturday off!) and having a handmade crepe from my dear friends at Dickinson's Delights and saying hello to all my other market friends...I used to work the Farmer's Market circuit with Jon and Tamberlyn and I really love everything about Market life.

Then I'd make my way down to Spektor..my favorite spot for coffee and an occasional breakfast..the beans are roasted to perfection, the place is cozy, the pour-overs are prepared with great care and their chocolate croissants cannot be beat. I'd read and write for awhile and stroll down to Davidson's for a brew and a visit. Dbros was my first job when I moved to town and is really where I made most of my first connections. I had a wonderful experience there and am really thankful for the owners, coworkers and customers who have since become like family to me.

From there, I'd hit DTCT for a little snack to visit my friends who work there, probably breeze through the Bullpen too, since by then a mini-bar crawl would be the order of the day. A nap in my hammock would work it's way in there somewhere.

For night life, I tend to start at The Q (because I just can't stay away!) for a cocktail and some appetizers and move on to Farmacy.. my latest love for small plate dinners.

From there I'd let my ears guide me to some live music that suits my mood as the place to chill for the evening.

There really are just so many options and it's often the case that I'll bump into friends and the day can totally change direction...and I love that about living here! It's a great place to just float on the breeze and see where the day takes you.

On the Past

After living here two years, I almost left Glens Falls to move to Tennessee. Leaving here felt really bittersweet because I had only lived here for a short time and didn't feel like I had enough of it, like I hadn't done enough here yet, but my life was taking me in that direction and I had some connections down there so I was excited about the new opportunity. Then, when that plan abruptly fell through, amidst a lot of shock and heartache, I found myself here in Glens Falls, still, moving back into the apartment that I never left. It was then, in the midst of heartbreak and disappointment that the friends I had made in town really rallied around me...my landlord worked it out so I could stay in my same place, which was an enormous comfort and that's when many of my coworkers and customers crossed over into being something more... and it was then that I knew this place was very special and eventually, as my heart mended, I followed my life-plan to start my own writing business and keep my goals on track, and I've done it all in just a few short years...just, without the guy I thought I'd be with. It was really for the best and I feel thankful, really, that my life kept me here. The friendships and sense of community I've found here have made a tremendous impact on me as a person. I love it here. I love ME here. The town, the people, my job. It really is a wonderful life and I feel lucky to have landed here.

On the Future

A wave of my magic wand would bring my sister and my nephews up here to live. My oldest nephew, Robbie, spends a month every summer with me, which he's been doing for the last 3 years. I think lake-life and mountain living is such a profound and peaceful experience and I'm so happy to be able to share that kind of time with him and my sister and younger nephew when they come to visit. They all love the hotel and The Q is great about everything when family comes to visit...they feel very at home here already and I'd love to have them close enough to ride their bikes to my house and scoop them up for summer movies in the park or at the drive-in, seeing their school plays or concerts and games....and just all that day-to day stuff that I miss being so far away. Also, I'd love a little grocery or market within walking distance. I think it would really complete the wide variety of options this town has to offer.

I think Glens Falls is a great town...a little hidden gem nestled between the more-touristy Lake George and the pricier Saratoga Region. I feel like people who discover us are always really surprised at how beautifully the town is maintained with all our lovely hanging flowers and tended garden beds, and lit-up lamp posts in the winter months. It really is a wonderland in any season with so much to do..and it has a very Gilmore Girls-Stars Hollow type of feel since everybody does ALL the things. Every festival, benefit, craft fair, farmer's market, hockey game....whatever it is, you can be sure to run into friends and see a ton of familiar faces. It's really a unique and wonderful thing.

My Glens Falls: Rodney Allen Bentley

Tonight we’re catching up with Rodney Allen Bentley! You’re sure to have seen his artwork all around town, and we’re excited to share our chat with him, including a bit of his history and the catalyst for his amazing artistic journey. Read it all below!

Rodney Allen Bentley

Tell us about yourself!

A native of Glens Falls, I experienced a very successful corporate career for nearly 18 years. I had continual promotions culminating in 5 relocations to 5 major cities. I lost that long career and my last home during the Great Recession. During that turmoil, I suffered a fall at my residence, and Emergency Medical Technicians rushed me to a major hospital Neurological Trauma Unit to stabilize multiple bleeds from a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). I later awoke in the Intensive Care Unit and learned that the severe TBI was the catalyst which called for CAT scans that uncovered previously undiagnosed severe spinal cervical degeneration, which required emergency surgery. I returned to Glens Falls to recover in 2012 and without much idea of what the future would hold.

Fast forward to the present time, I have become an emerging and successful visual artist and my gallery openings are making a mark. My work is admired by  business owners, city leaders, hundreds of home owners in the region as well as children. My architectural artistic renditions were recently gifted to Saga, Japan by the Glens Falls Mayor Delegation visit to the city in 2018.

I now reside at a magnificent property known as the Historical McEchron House, built in 1891. It is better known as the 5 star Morgan and Company Restaurant.  The property has a stunning canopied wrap around porch, exterior bar, dual stone dining patios, brilliant landscaping, evening lighting and the wonderful summer sounds of a New Orleans Jazz Ensemble.

I also now serve on two separate of Board of Directors. Southern Adirondack Independent Festival and Steps for Stroke. Both not for profit agencies have different resources to provide and fill needs to those attempting to live independently. I happily provide many donations of my work for regional fundraising events in the area, including the Festival of Trees at the Queensbury Hotel.

ON LIFE IN GLENS FALLS

It was a Sunday in mid February when I was introduced to a new world at Glens Falls Hospital. I was a first child for my Mother. Her great faith and fortitude would allow my 5 younger siblings and I to be reared within the Adirondacks in the quaint town of Thurman NY. Winters seemed serene, silent, snowy and included lots of sledding and skating. Summer meant swimming on the shores of the Hudson River, exploring the forests, fishing and berry picking. Looking back, the living space with a family of eight was limited so we all contributed to daily chores.

As I graduated SUNY Adirondack, JCPENNEY recruited me and I was provided a successful 18 year career. I liked experiencing new places, new cities, new friends and new homes long the way. Different cultures, ethnicities, cuisine and led to a bigger world calling me. Relocations allowed new homes in cities like Rochester, NYC, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I still follow the Steelers and the Penguins!

Returning to Glens Falls from Philadelphia occurred through the support of my lovely former fiancé Janet, my Mother and my siblings. My compassionate sister Michelle opened her home for me in South Glens Falls. Reading comprehension, speech therapy and aphasia were a few of the obstacles I faced related to the brain injury. A new life was about to begin and evolve in a way much greater than imagined, although I still experienced the darkness of upcoming corridors before the light. Local Neuropsychologist, Dr. Broege provided extensive and lengthy neurocognitive tests evaluating my abilities. I was very hurt, sad and even more confused to learn that I no longer could successfully navigate previous management job responsibilities. I had not yet understood that the creative portion of my brain, after the fall, was unlocked and was raring to go!

One of those dark corridors took me to a place where the spirit began to become present. I was in a controlled environment undergoing treatment and I was approached by a very big man in his forties. He sat down next me and lowered his head and folded his arms.  He was asking if I could draw something for him, a birthday card for his 5 year old grandson. I thought to shrug off the request as it made no sense to me. However, I agreed to make an attempt as I took notice of his emotions and feeling the sincerity of his voice. Paper and pencil were found for use. I sat a few moments looking at empty white space as the pencil began to effortlessly move itself. Not only had I created a wonderful birthday card which a five year old would be proud to have, but I had a nearby audience observing my work with wonder without me being aware. It was then that I knew my most effective way to speak to my new world would be through my hands. Although a long road, I was on my way.

Regardless of the weather, I would begin my early morning trek from South Glens Falls to coffee shops in Glens Falls. Spot Coffee became my home. I would begin creating artwork as the door opened at 7am and many times not leave until 10pm. If I was hungry, I would take advantage of the $1 day old muffins at the shop and I would even trade volunteer time for lunch at the local Soup Kitchen on Lawrence Street.

Spot is where, journey partner, Dr. Karen McShane discovered my passion. Dr. McShane, a volunteer at the Wood Theater and an enormous fan of the arts. Her support of arts goes beyond visual arts. She supports musicals, opera, symphony, film or stage. Her interest in an unknown artist who created artwork at Spot Coffee every day, hour by hour, seven days a week and year after year intrigued her. More local business owners began encouraging my creative process and even publications took interest such as the wonderful Chronicle and Post Star took notice. It would not be long until my work would become artwork hung within local businesses including Davidson Brothers Restaurant and Brewery, The Queensbury Hotel, Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, Adirondack Trust Co., Glen Street Associates, City Hall, Spot Coffee, Wood Theater, Samantha’s Cafe, Lake George Olive Oil Co., and more.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I feel connected to water and I crave biking and find morning trips along the Feeder Canal to Haviland Cove, the canal locks and turbines in Hudson Falls and of course the Warren County Bike Trail to Lake George all inspirational.

I am finding the more that I exercise in moderation, it provides more clarity in my mind and expands my creative process. City Park is beautiful and I truly appreciate the evening summer events. Seeing the morning Tai Chi class on the lush green lawn calms the mind. Evening sunsets are unique and I relish each one. Stepping away from my studio and drafting table lets me connect with the energetic evening soul of Glens Falls. Meeting new and old clients and friends, catching up with local business owners and servers or just feeling the vibrant social atmosphere including Downtown Social, Fenimore’s Pub and Davidson’s Brothers Brewery, just to name a few.

On the Past

Fond childhood memories include South Street and the taste of New Way Lunch “Dirt Dogs”.  Gurney Lane Community Pool and occasionally an evening at the Glen Drive-In on Route 9. Saturdays during summer I would receive five dollars to clean the Catholic Church or rake the lawn in Warrensburg. The five dollars I received were given to my mother to support upcoming school clothing shopping. My first official job came about when I was sixteen years old with the Thurman Highway Department. I mowed grass and “threw” rocks from the many dirt roads in Thurman.  I later would make money before graduating high school at Sitting Bull Ranch Resort and 1000 Acres as a dishwasher, prep cook, waiter and a recreational director.

On the Future

I have had many requests by local friends to write a memoir (which I have started). I have been approached by a few screenwriters that find my experiences  worthwhile and intriguing. I’ve been told to not be overly concerned about writing everyday as each day’s experiences become a new chapter for me to write.

I look forward to bringing an easel and creating new works once the new Farmer’s Market on South Street comes to fruition.

By the way…

For those interested in my work, it can be found here.

Personalized Holiday gift art requests are already pouring in. Whether charcoal holiday theme home renditions, pet portraits, children portraits, family portraits, boats or whatever can be personalized thru an original piece of art and a wonderful gift.

My recent “Adirondack Winterludes” gallery exhibition at Tannery Pond in North Creek was such a huge success that I have had requests to bring the exhibition to the Glens Falls Region. I am very happy to announce that Paula Traina from State Farm is welcoming “Rodney Allen Bentley’s newest Winter Collection” for an opening evening on Friday November 15th, 5pm to 8 pm at 736 Upper Glen Street, Suite 200A, Queensbury NY.

My Glens Falls: Andy Camp

This week we’re chatting with Andy Camp! If you’ve been to an Adirondack Thunder game, you’ve likely seen him - camera in hand! Read on to find out where he got his start as a designer (at a store we all knew and loved!), hear a few of his favorite fall activities, and find out the sweet lunch tradition he carries on with his son.

Andy Camp - My Glens Falls

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Andy Camp, and I have lived and worked in and around Glens Falls my whole life. I met my wife Lisa in high school and we’ve been married for over 26 years. We have two children, Garrett and Delaney and a year-old black lab named Jett. I am the team photographer for the Adirondack Thunder, and work with a number of local businesses as a freelance designer for web and print.

I began my career designing weekly flyers for the Joy Store and then moved on to the design team at Kamyr in 1992. In 1998 I built West Mountain’s first website, completed an update of the City of Glens Falls’ website with Jim Clark and Mayor Bob Regan, and then developed a site for the new hockey team. The web was an exciting new place to work and I grabbed every opportunity I could!

I enjoyed working with the hockey team so much that I’ve been involved with each hockey team to play in Glens Falls since 1999. I even spent a few seasons working with the River Rats in Albany while we waited for a new tenant at the Glens Falls Civic Center. These days you can find me taking pictures at each Thunder game. If you’re at a game – and you really should go if you’ve never been to one - stop and say hello and I’ll take your picture!

On Life in Glens Falls

I’ve been offered chances to move away from the Glens Falls, but something about this area keeps me and my family here. There is a comfort about the people and the places and just a feeling that being here is “just right.” It’s a hard feeling to explain if you haven’t lived here, but you know what I mean if you have.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

While all four seasons bring something special to look forward to, Fall brings our favorites. Hockey season and the Adirondack Balloon Festival are the events that we look forward to the most! We also love to walk around downtown Glens Falls and go the Bullpen, hit the Food Truck Corral at The Shirt Factory, stop at Rob and Deb’s or Martha’s Ice Cream (depending on who gets to pick), pick apples at Hicks Orchard and stock up on the best cider donuts in the area – but our favorite place to go is the Harvest for pizza and French fries!

I’ve seen an amazing transformation of Glens Falls over the years and I am very excited to see it continue. There are more places for families to go, and creative events are bringing more people into the City than ever before. This year we went to events like Take-a-Bite, performances at the Wood Theater (especially Dancing with the Adirondack Stars show that my wife Lisa was in!), Glens Falls Dragons baseball and Thunder Hockey games. We saw so many people enjoying them with us, it was awesome! Glens Falls used to be called “The City on the Rise” and I strongly believe that this is true once again.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

The perfect day would start with a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a blueberry bagel at Lox of Bagels and Moor in Queensbury. They make your order right in front of you, so you know it’s fresh!  A round of golf would be next, followed by a visit to New Way Lunch and then off to work at a Hockey Game. I am excited to go to each game as Thunder fans are second to none! Make no mistake that while they are the most avid fans in the league, they are the friendliest and create a family atmosphere that you won’t find at any other arena. After the game, we like to celebrate a win at the Bullpen where we are likely to see players or fans there to wrap-up a great night!

On the Past

Growing up, my grandfather would take me golfing whenever he could. No matter where we played, we always finished up having lunch at “Dirty John’s” (a.k.a. New Way Lunch). I loved going there with him and looked forward to the loaded hot dogs and a 10 ounce Pepsi. I miss my grandfather and our golf and lunch outings and this is a memory of him and Glens Falls that I cherish. My son and I go as often as we can and we continue the tradition of lunch after golf in his memory.

On the Future

I wish I could make the city bigger, with more of the same qualities of the people and places that we already have. I love it here, and it’s not only because of our location, but more importantly because of the people. The people of Glens Falls and the surrounding area are the reason that we have all of the great places and events that we enjoy. We are a generous and very creative community that support each other in so many ways. What could be better than more Glens Falls?

My Glens Falls: Caitlin Stedman

We’re chatting with Caitlin Stedman this week! Read on to find out about the films (yes - plural!) she has in the works, her go-to spot in the city to relax (you know, when she’s not producing films), and a couple of her favorite hidden gems.

Caitlin Stedman

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Caitlin Stedman. I live a few minutes outside of downtown with my dog Vinny. I am Operations & Communications at the graphic/web design and marketing firm Advokate. I am also a screenwriter and filmmaker with my production company Snarky Aardvark Films. I have two feature films in the works right now. One is a narrative family drama called Forget-Me-Nots and the other is a documentary titled Charles Evans Hughes & The Adirondacks.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born and raised in the area but moved around a lot in my twenties. Nowhere felt quite like Glens Falls. The arts scene here embraced me with open arms at a time when I needed it most. I’m so happy I decided to move back and stay!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Sunny mornings in the city are idyllic. It is absolutely my favorite time to be downtown. Families are off to work or school, people are walking their dogs, tai chi might be happening in the park, everyone has their morning coffee and a smile.

Glens Falls has many hidden gems but I’m going to mention two favorites. The first is Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council or LARAC. A lot of people are familiar with the LARAC June Arts Festival but they have a beautifully curated art gallery and gift shop that is open year-round at 7 Lapham Place (tucked behind the library). LARAC is also an amazing resource for artists of any medium. They will go out of their way to support your projects and answer any questions you may have, as well as providing grant funding and workshops. They have been an integral part of my filmmaking journey.

The second hidden gem is The Chapman Museum. I’m a history buff and have spent hours combing through their website. Specifically in The Corners Collaborative Community History Project. Here you can find a historic timeline of Glens Falls starting in 1642 along with biographies, maps, photos and more!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day would start with going for a walk with my Dad and my dog in either Crandall Park or Cole’s Woods. Afterwards I would pop into Spot Coffee for an iced green tea. For lunch I would head to The Exchange for a grown-up grilled cheese and soup (their vegan split pea is the BEST). In the evening I may head to Art In The Public Eye’s Outdoor Cinema, stroll City Park or go to an art opening before stopping at Downtown City Tavern for wine (Malbec please) and a margherita pizza.

On the Past

As a kid I loved spending rainy days in The Crandall Library. I remember curling up in their window seats and looking out at the people below walking with their umbrellas. The Library is still a very relaxing place for me. A place I really miss is the North Country Coffee Cafe on South Street. Their Chai tea and Whiteface wrap... I still have dreams about that wasabi-mayo!

On the Future

I echo Amanda Blanton’s answers that I would love to see the return of a bookstore, the addition of a rooftop bar or restaurant and also a dog park. I also think a cat cafe or dog diner where the animals are up for adoption would be amazing!

Thanks Caitlin!

My Glens Falls: Megan Nolin

This week we caught up with Megan Nolin! Born and raised in Glens Falls, she shared some favorites from her childhood, what she loves about working for the City of Glens Falls, and a pretty amazing itinerary for a perfect day in the city.

My Glens Falls - Megan Nolin

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I’m Megan. I live in Queensbury with my boyfriend Jason, my daughter Addison, his two children Alexa & Luke, and our yellow lab puppy Tank. I work for the City of Glens Falls as Webmaster/Social Media Relations. I love my job! Everyone I get to work with is great. My bosses Mayor Hall and Bob Curtis are the absolute best. I couldn’t imagine having more supportive people helping me everyday.

On Life in Glens Falls

Growing up my Mom and I lived all around the area. Glens Falls, Queensbury and Hudson Falls. I remember loving Crandall Pond and Crandall Park so much. I also took dance classes at ARDT (Adirondack Repertory Dance Theater) in downtown. Dance recitals at the Queensbury Hotel top my list of childhood memories.

Being the City’s Webmaster isn’t my first time working for the City. I was a clerk in the Glens Falls City Clerk’s Office back in 2007 for about 3 years. At that time I was a resident of Glens Falls. We owned a home on Knight Street. I left my position in 2011 to raise my daughter Addison when she was around a year old. I loved the time I was able to spend with her. You can’t put a price tag on being there to see all of your child’s milestones. It was an amazing opportunity I had to be a stay-at-home Mom. I’m so grateful for that time in my life. However, in the Fall of  2018 I decided it was time to get back into the work force and where else but the City of Glens Falls? I’m so happy that I made the decision to come back. The City’s new and improved website was unveiled in November of 2018. I love being able to keep people up to speed on everything that is going on in Glens Falls. We just recently started an Instagram page for the City as well. Social media is such a great way to get information out to the public. We are at 630 followers and growing in two months. Follow us today @cityofglensfalls.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls has to be the restaurants and eateries downtown. Some of my favorites are Mikado, Siam Thai and Downtown Social. I especially love eating outside during the summer months. I can’t wait to try The Exchange Café! I’ve heard great things and drool over their Instagram posts daily.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in Glens Falls would start off with an iced coffee and a Belgium waffle at Spot Coffee with my daughter. Then we’d go for a walk around City Park and do a little shopping. We would stop into the Crandall Public Library, browse around and pick out some books or DVD’s.  Followed by a Fire Sister Roll and a Kani salad outside on the patio at Mikado. Next it’s off to Rob & Deb’s for my favorite ice cream. Strawberry Cheesecake in a special waffle cone (homemade on the premises). Mmmmm. After that we would play at Crandall Park. Later it would be time for Nana to babysit and off to date night at Morgan & Company. We would feast on calamari & candied garlic spare ribs for appetizers with a glass of pinot noir and seafood bouillabaisse for the main course. Finally we would end the night with an Adirondack Thunder game at the Cool Insuring Arena. Of course that last part wouldn’t fit in seasonally with the rest of my day, but this would be my perfect day in Glens Falls.

On the Future

If I could bring something to Glens Falls it would be a dog park. I know how much Tank loves to get out and run around. I think it would be a great addition to the City.

My Glens Falls: Dale Mattison

Tonight we’re chatting with our friend and neighbor, Dale Mattison. We were psyched to hear what brought Dale and his wife back to Glens Falls after having lived elsewhere around the country, the sweet connection they have to the street they live on, and the one restaurant they miss the most downtown (and I’m sure many of you would agree!) - read it all below!

Dale Mattison Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Dale Mattison, founder and principal at 32 Mile Media, a video production company based in Saratoga. I’m married to Molly, a Glens Falls native, and we have two boys, Rex and Rocco.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Lake George, but Glens Falls always seemed like the quintessential Hometown USA. I loved the beautiful old homes that seemed well-lived in. We have lived in a number of different places around the country, and when we thought about starting a family, we wanted our children to have an experience similar to ours. After five years in Chicago, we moved back to the area in 2013 and bought our home in Glens Falls in 2015. Our kids truly have a village here, between our families and friends that are like family. Our son, who just turned 2 last week, greets all our neighbors by name.

We have a home built in 1911 on Lincoln Avenue, a beautiful, tree-lined street with fantastic neighbors. It’s also the street my wife grew up on. We love the sense of community here, including block, alley and holiday parties. One of our favorite days is Halloween – we typically have more than 500 trick-or-treaters. We also love having friends over for breakfast on the porch on Memorial Day, before walking down to Glen and watching the parade together.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Saratoga and Lake George are both really accessible, but we avoid the high cost of living and tourism crowds. And with that, the people who choose to live here are generally just good, down-to-earth people who value community. Tonight, we went to the Food Truck Corral at the Shirt Factory, and sat down at a picnic table with our dinner across from another couple. The woman offered to hold our baby so we could eat, and so she did. We later learned she knew our family, and by the end of the meal she gave my wife a hug and kissed our baby. That doesn’t happen just anywhere.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day would be to take my son and grab coffee and a “Bev” sandwich at Cool Beans, or head to Lox of Bagels and Moor for a bagel. We’d take a walk around the neighborhood or down to the Farmer’s Market, and hit the swings at Crandall Park. With two kids under 2, we don’t get out for dinner much right now but we love to have dinner on the porch, and invite friends over for a drink or play date. When we do get take-out, Mikado, the Bullpen and Downtown City Tavern often make the list. We love to spend holiday dinners and brunches at the Queensbury Hotel and we look forward to their new offerings.

On the Past

Growing up in Lake George, most of my memories were slightly north of Glens Falls. But I do remember my dad and I going downtown to the newsstand where farmacy now is. He’d get a newspaper and magazines, and I would get penny candy and Topps baseball cards, complete with a stick of stale, unwrapped gum.

Though it’s more recent, the place we miss the most is without question Bistro Tallulah. My wife and I spent every special occasion for nearly 10 years there. Even when we lived in Chicago, we would come home and celebrate with friends and family – always at Tallulah. A house salad with balsamic, deviled eggs (that Sean was excited to unveil and brought out to us the first night he offered them) and a medium-rare hangar steak with pomme frites will FOREVER be our favorite meal.

On the Future

We really like Glens Falls the way it is. It’s not Lake George or Saratoga, and it doesn’t need to be. It is what it is… Hometown USA. If I had to choose, I’d love to have a Trader Joe’s and a few more dining options. We’re looking forward to Craft on 9 moving downtown. And I’d love to see downtown continue to grow more vibrant – my in-laws bought me a book of pictures of Glens Falls in the ‘40s and ‘50s and it was so alive. But overall, we like it as is. I love the fact that we’re starting traditions here that have been in my wife’s family for decades – like going to Massie’s for my son’s 2nd birthday. His grandfather is on the 68th year of the same tradition.

I grew up in Lake George and had a wonderful childhood – I wouldn’t change it for the world. But there was always something about Glens Falls that drew me in. Having lived here now, I feel there’s a magic quality to Glens Falls that’s rooted in tradition and pride. These are the qualities that I want in a place where I bring up my boys.

My Glens Falls: Katy Cook

This week we’re getting to know Katy Cook! It’s always fun to hear stories of folks moving here from out of town (or across the country, in her case!), falling in love with the area, and staying put. Read on to find out what brought her here, where she graduated (with a class of 12!), and the Glens Falls favorites that have kept her local.

Katy Cook Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi there! My name is Katy Cook, and I am the Telehealth Project Manager at Adirondack Health Institute (AHI), located across from the Queensbury Hotel in downtown Glens Falls. I have been working in health care for almost eight years now and truly love the work I get to do at AHI. I help health care facilities of all types to develop virtual care programs or service lines for their patients to better access specialists and care that is often hard to reach or find in more rural areas. I am also a trainer/coach part-time at Lake George CrossFit, located on Bay Rd. (I am sure many of you drive by and see our large bay doors open and people working out inside!)

I graduated from Utica College with my Master’s degree in Health Care Administration and have lived in the Glens Falls/Queensbury area for close to ten years now. I live in Queensbury with my four-year-old cat named Marshmallow who is basically my son.

On Life in Glens Falls

I actually was born and raised in Southern California until I was 11 years old, and we (my parents and brother and I) made a cross-country move to a very tiny town many of you may know, Minerva, NY. It was quite a transition coming from sunny beaches to snowy winters. I graduated from Minerva with a class of 12! I would never trade my time in that tiny town for anything, there is something truly special about a small community like that.

Once I graduated, I was itching to go away for college and spent a year at SUNY Oswego. I quickly realized that I missed the area and returned home to get my undergraduate degree from the SUNY Plattsburgh extension campus at SUNY Adirondack. I was one of the first few classes to graduate from that program and I am so thankful that SUNY Adirondack has helped create these opportunities for continuing one’s college education.

Through my time at SUNY Plattsburgh, I made the move from Minerva to Glens Falls, and have lived in various homes and apartments in the area for the last decade. My parents recently relocated from Minerva to South Glens Falls, so it is nice to have them nearby. I currently have a seven-minute drive to work and I really cannot beat that commute!

What keeps me in the area is how much the city has to offer, and how much the city has grown in the last few years. Glens Falls is truly a community that supports their own and is slowly adding in great new dining options, housing options, outdoor activities, and more! I encourage my out of town friends to give Glens Falls a chance and when they do, they are always pleasantly surprised at how much the city has to offer!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect Glens Falls day would start with a workout at Lake George CrossFit or a run in Cole’s Woods, followed by breakfast at Spektor, their nitro cold brew lattes are my kryptonite! I try to get to the Saturday Farmer’s Market when I can, it is such a lively environment and so important to support local farmers. I love to grab lunch from Gourmet Café – their California Club Wrap is my favorite! My favorite beauty spot is Beauty Bubble – they are a great group of women who are very talented at what they do (check them out for an amazing facial or set of lashes!) I also enjoy walking around City Park on a nice day and would wrap up the day with dinner at Downtown Social with friends – their new menu is out of this world and I am so happy to have yet another great food option downtown!

On the Future

I would love to see the Cool Insuring Arena book some major music or comedy acts. This would be a great way to bring people into town and bolster the local economy for a night or two. I am also very excited to see what else is in the works for the South Street projects! Lastly, it would be great to have a healthy grocery store in Glens Falls, maybe not downtown, but nearby (I’m thinking Whole Foods or maybe a Healthy Living!)

Glens Falls NY

Thanks, Katy! We would love to see a Healthy Living up this way!!

My Glens Falls: Bari Flatley

This week we’re chatting with Bari Flatley, who you’ll most certainly recognize from Studio Bari! We were so happy to get to know her better (and visit her new location and venture, Studio Elements). Read on to find out what brought her north from New Jersey, what inspired her to start her own business, and how she likes to spend her days off!

Bari Flatley, Studio Bari, Studio Elements, Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I’m Bari! Yes it’s my full name, not short for anything :)

I live in town with my boyfriend Zack and my kitty cat Olive! I own two businesses here in Glens Falls, which keep me very busy. My first was Studio Bari (that’s how most people know me: as your local nail girl) and I just opened Studio Elements LLC, which is where I operate Studio Bari out of, alongside a few other girls running their own little beauty businesses.

I spent my younger years growing up in New Jersey with my mom, dad, sister and brother and we vacationed most of our summers in Lake George. In 2003, my dad surprised my family and moved us up here to Queensbury and I graduated from Lake George High School in 2008.

On Entrepreneurship

After high school, I was one of those lost souls who didn’t know what to do next in life. I worked at a few pizza shops and then at a bank for a couple years. Fashion and beauty was something I was always interested in and after working at the bank for so long, I started getting bored. I went to cosmetology school in 2011 thinking I wanted to learn to do hair, but quickly realized that was not my passion. I worked on getting my own nails strong and healthy and as it turned out I was pretty good at nail art, so classmates started noticing and asking me to do theirs. That’s when I fell in love!

I honestly never thought I would wind up starting my own business. After working at a few other salons I began to realize that I would have so much more freedom creatively and realistically on my own. So I branched off and opened Studio Bari. The more I worked for myself, the more I wanted to give other beauty professionals the same opportunity, so that’s when my dream of Studio Elements started coming to fruition. And now I can genuinely say that TWO of my dreams have come true!

There are so many challenges that come with working for yourself. I’d say my biggest challenge is actually taking time for myself. I know I need a break every once in a while but it’s SO HARD to say no to people when you love what you do! I’ve gotten a lot better about it. Even though there are plenty of challenges that come with self-employment, there are SO many more pros to outweigh it. I genuinely couldn’t be happier with the life I’ve created for myself.

On Life in Glens Falls

In 2016, I moved to an apartment in Glens Falls with my boyfriend (who grew up here) but I still worked up in LG. After leaving my job up there, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Glens Falls community, so I opened my little Studio Bari here in town and I think it’s one of the best decisions I ever made.

The next step in my goal was to expand, so I found the most perfect location over on Lawrence Street. My dad completely renovated the entire building to fit the esthetic I envisioned for Studio Elements LLC. You should go drive by, the before and after is incredible!

I absolutely LOVE living here in Glens Falls, especially so close to work. I got a fantastically colored cruiser bike for my birthday this year and I ride it to work every chance I get!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

There are so many places I love! In a dream world, I would wake up every day and go get my makeup done by my girl Makeup By Baileigh (@_makeupbybaileigh on Instagram). But let’s face it- this is the real world and I’m lucky if I feel like putting effort into my own makeup. During the work week, Juicin’ Jar is my go-to for an afternoon pick-me-up. I even got my co-workers hooked there. Cristina and I have been friends for a long time so it’s so great to be able to support her. On the weekend, my boyfriend and I love walking or riding our bikes downtown to play darts at Mean Max and order food from The Bullpen. Their pulled pork quesadilla is my favorite! That’s not without stopping at Minky Mink first, though, so I can see if Maura has brought anything new in!

On the Past

My GF memories don’t go back very far since I’ve only lived here in recent years but I know, one day, I will look back and maybe drive by my “old apartment” or “old studio” and be so grateful, just like I am right now in the present.

On the Future

I’m really looking forward to the future of Glens Falls. It’s been incredible to watch it grow and I can’t wait to see more businesses pop up! I would love to see more of the outside events like LARAC, Take-A-Bite and Food Truck Night at The Shirt Factory! Its so fun sitting at work over on Lawrence Street and watching the streets fill up with people heading that way! Sometimes, if the girls and I have time, we run down there to see if we can get our hands on some Darling Doughnuts before she sells out!

My Glens Falls: Dan Wade

This week, we’re getting to know Dan Wade! Read on to find out what brought him to the area, some fond memories of Glens Falls from when he was a kid, and hear his favorite hidden gems in the city.

Dan Wade Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Dan Wade and I’m an attorney practicing in the area of Real Estate with Ianniello Anderson, P.C. I live, work, and play in the area with my wife, Rachel, son, Owen, and our rescued tail-wagger, Dolly (she’s lucky she’s cute!). I’ve been practicing in the area of real estate for the past 15 years and belong to the Chamber of Commerce, several bar associations, and am the cub master for Pack 16.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up just south of here in Schuylerville and began my college career at ACC, where I was able to explore the City of Glens Falls during my breaks. During the winter months, we loved coming to Red Wing and Ice Hawk games at the Civic Center (now CIA), and in the summer, we would come up for the various concerts and festivals, the favorite of which was the Balloon Festival.  When we decided to move last year and were looking for the perfect area to root our family, the Glens Falls area topped the list in so many ways:  1) it is close to other family, 2) the community is so friendly and helpful, 3) all of our entertainment and dining needs were right here, 4) the city is growing and businesses are growing in the area which is a great sign of the economic health of the area, 5) traveling in and around the area is easy, especially with the proximity to the Northway, just to name a few. I could go on and on….and on!

We own a home in the Herald Square area of Queensbury, which is less than 4 miles from the heart of downtown Glens Falls. We love to remodel and make things our own. One of our realtors said we should create our own fixer-upper show like Chip and Joanna Gaines, and anyone who follows me on Facebook has seen the before and after pictures from the projects we’ve completed. We love our neighborhood. It’s so quiet, friendly, walkable, and so close to downtown Glens Falls. We couldn’t be happier.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about the Glens Falls area is most definitely the people! I’ve traveled to many areas of the state and can say without a doubt that the Glens Falls area has the most hard-working, loyal, caring people of any area I’ve been. I think some of that comes from the deep history of blue-collar workers in the area, whether the mills and factories or the farmers or the mechanics. Growing up, I spent several summers tossing bales of hay from the fields into wagons. It’s just what we did. It’s who we are!

One of the things people outside of the Glens Falls area don’t realize is how rich and diverse of a music scene there is here. From the solo acts at the local brew pubs, to the plays, comedy, and orchestras at the Wood and Park Theaters, to the local garage bands cutting their teeth at Gug’s on Haskell Avenue. Sounds cliché, but there literally is something for everyone. Two of my favorite little gems to go and get lost in with my family are the World Awareness Children’s Museum on Warren Street and The Shirt Factory on Lawrence Street. The children’s museum teaches so much about diversity and cultures from all over the world in a hands-on kind of way and even has family trivia nights from time to time which are super fun! The Shirt Factory is like stepping back in time to the artisan days. You can not only find great one of a kind treasures, but the building itself is full of memorabilia and informational plaques that share the history of the beautiful building that has found its new purpose.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect day in Glens Falls for me would start with an early rise to watch hot air balloons take off at sunrise. From there, a hearty western omelet at Poopie’s would definitely hit the spot. After strolling around downtown and visiting the local shops, we would pick up something amazing from ADK Fresh on South Street and have a picnic in Crandall Park. After taking a little nap under a tree in the park, we would make our way to The Shirt Factory and meander through the various shops, maybe watch an artist sketch his latest creation. When we’ve soaked up enough history, we would have a little dinner at Mikado, watching the fire show and catching flying broccoli in mid-air! The sake would surely prepare us for our final event of the evening as we stroll to the Park Theater for a gut-busting comedy show.

On the Past

A favorite childhood memory of mine was when my grandfather and I would go out fishing in a local pond or canal. Any catches of the day were always somehow lost to a clumsy gramp who would trip and knock the bucket of fish back into the water. After that, we would always go to our favorite lunch spot, Dirty John’s on South Street (now New Way Lunch). My gramp would tell me stories of how Dirty John’s got its name, and I thought it was gross and cool at the same time. After all, I rode my bike through puddles and rolled around in the mud!

On the Future

This is a tough one since there are already so many wonderful things in the city! If I had to pick a couple of things and dream big, I’d love to see an underground parking garage to leave the beauty and charm of the city intact as it continues to grow and alleviate the parking concerns that people have here. It would also be nice to see the city transform more into a pedestrian and bicycle friendly city by adding bicycle lanes on the road.

The City of Glens Falls will always mean something special to me since I met my wife in this area. Having now moved back to the area and having lived here for over a year, there’s no doubt we will look back at this as one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. I look forward to continuing to work, live, and play here and to continue to find ways to give back to a community that has already given me so much. I encourage others to get out there to do the same.

Thanks, Dan! Great idea on that underground parking garage!

My Glens Falls: Dan Biddiscombe

This week, we were so happy to chat with Dan Biddiscombe. Always a friendly face at Downtown Social, we absolutely loved hearing his fond hometown memories as well as his current favorites, and some big dreams for the future too :)

Dan Biddiscombe - Downtown Social Glens Falls NY

Tell us about yourself!

Greetings! My name is Dan Biddiscombe, I work as a Hospitality Executive with Downtown Hospitality Group. Currently General Manager at Downtown Social. I have an 18 year old daughter Katy, who just graduated from South Glens Falls and will be attending SUNY Adirondack in the Fall. Two older brothers that live and work locally. I have a 12 year old Chocolate Lab named Teddy (Roosevelt) who is basically my son and has no idea that he is a dog. I am lifelong Dodger fan, graduated from St. John’s University in NYC, and other than the 10 years I spent during and post graduating college living in NYC, I’ve lived in the Glens Falls area. I have been working in hospitality for over 30 years. From washing dishes at Pat Russo’s Dugout, waiting tables at Massie’s, bartending in NYC and Saratoga, to management at The Sagamore, O’Toole’s and now in Downtown Glens Falls at Social. I’ve been mentored by and have worked with some amazing people along the way. I dabble in some film stuff, local projects, and write when I have the time.

On Life in Glens Falls

I was born in Glens Falls, lived in the East End of Glens Falls on Lawrence St (my Mother’s family home for many years) then moved to SGF when I was 6. My Dad grew up in Ft. Edward and my Mom was a Glens Falls kid, a St. Mary’s grad. My journey back to Glens Falls was not my original plan – but I’m so glad it worked out that way! I couldn’t imagine raising my daughter anywhere else.

My girlfriend Kelly and I currently reside in Queensbury, just 10 minutes from Downtown Glens Falls. Our development has lots of trails for walking the dog, a beautiful horse farm, and a great view of West Mountain. We love it!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the development of Downtown. The City has changed so much from when I was growing up here. Walking around Downtown wasn’t really “a thing” back then. I feel Downtown Glens Falls currently resembles a mix between the Hometown USA my parents grew up in, and Brooklyn Heights (where I lived for years) more than the city I grew up in. It’s pretty cool! As far as a hidden gem? I would say the people I work with at DT Social, DTCT – and the people I have amazing conversations with that work in hospitality, music, film, art in this area. We are blessed to have a tight community of talented, interesting people working in Downtown.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day in Glens Falls always begins with coffee and bagels with my daughter at Spektor. I love the Fall, so a stroll down Glen Street and around Crandall Library for sure (anyone that knows me, knows I will have headphones on and DMB playing.) For dinner, of course I’m partial to DT Social and DTCT. I really enjoy and am proud of the food at both places. I enjoy all the restaurants in Downtown, honestly. I’m excited for Craft on 9 to join the mix – Rob does a great job. Not to mention he’s a fellow Bulldog. To end the night, I would say my “go to” would be DTCT. People love the late night scene at Social! I’m usually looking for a quiet, quick IPA with my Tavern buddies before I head home.

On the Past

Some of my favorite memories are sitting on my front porch on Lawrence Street, eating a small brown bag of Swedish Fish from Marguerite’s Corner Store, watching the St. Mary’s Football team jog by, wearing all white uniforms and black cleats around their neck (any East Ender will remember that). I felt like I lived next to Penn State campus! Going to the Red Wings games for sure, and now being friends with some of those guys is pretty cool. Lou’s Pizza after the hockey games was a staple. I remember seeing my first movie, Bambie, at the old Paramount Theater. Going to Woolworth’s for ice cream sodas with my Grandmother. The Joy Store was where we all shopped, for literally everything. Seeing Aerosmith at the Civic Center was a yearly event. Lots of other stuff, I probably shouldn’t say.. Haha.

…And on the Future

If I could wave a magic wand, I would bring The Dave Matthews Band to the South High Marathon Dance, Aaron Sorkin’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird would be at The Wood, and Union Square Café would…ok.. I’ll get serious… I guess I would hurry up the South Street projects that are in the works. I’m very excited to see not only the visual, but the socio-economic impact it will have on Downtown, hopefully being a place for all to enjoy. I can’t go without mentioning my SGF peeps across the bridge needing a large Target like store, badly!!

Some More Glens Falls Favorites

I’m still in awe of how our community came together for Common Roots. I just love the Weber Family, the staff, and of course their beer. Also, I wish that everyone could be in attendance during the South High Marathon Dance closing ceremony. It’s hard to really appreciate the impact the school, kids and community have on people that truly need help, without being there. It’s emotionally overwhelming. Having been a part of it as a student, parent, and volunteer is something I’m very proud of. I’m also very proud to be a part of the ADK Film Festival Committee. Year one exceeded expectations, and continues to grow beyond our wildest dreams. It's truly amazing!

Thanks for sharing, Dan! We loved hearing your Glens Falls memories and I still remember shopping at the Joy Store (and Toys for Joy!) when I was a kid.

My Glens Falls: Jacqui Royael

This week, we were thrilled to chat with Jacqui Royael, who we had the pleasure of connecting with through our friends at the amazing Double H Ranch. Read on to find out how she got her start at Double H, where she heads for ice cream on a summer Sunday, and a fun type of café she’d like to see downtown.

Jacqui Royael

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Jacqui Royael, Director of Operations at the Double H Ranch. My husband Scott and I are grateful, and at times weary, parents to Maya, 10 Parker, 7 and baby Nora just turned 1. When I’m not at Double H, I enjoy traveling with my family and writing about them after they fall asleep.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up locally in Whitehall, (Go Railroaders!) but Double H has happily kept me connected to the area. Twenty years ago, I started as a nervous camp counselor unsure of where I wanted to be in the world. As a college kid, I could have never imagined the profound impact Double H would have had on my own life and our community. After teaching Special Education, I came back to the area to begin my professional career at Double H in 2005. Seeing the difference kindness and acceptance can have in the lives of others, keeps me here every day.

My husband and I moved from Saratoga Springs to Glens Falls when our daughter, Maya was 1. We loved how close Glens Falls was to all the things we love - the mountains, our jobs, the lakes, and our family. We are now cresting on ten years in the area and what keeps us in the community is everything it has to offer. How easy it is to walk to restaurants, school, coffee shops, but also the proximity to new playgrounds or a day hike.

We loved the character of the homes in Glens Falls. Our home is over 100 years old and despite the aging roof and small bathrooms, we love the history it has and how everyone can find their own quiet little space. My favorite is time spent sitting on the porch.

I love how my neighborhood has shaped our children’s young lives. From their incredible school, Kensington Road Elementary, just a couple blocks away, to all the friends they happily go outside and play with.

My commute to work heading north into the Adirondacks is perhaps the prettiest around too.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite part of living in Glens Falls is how easy it makes enjoying the best parts of life. I wish more people knew how many opportunities it affords families. We love the Wood Theatre, especially all the wonderfully talented Broadway Upstate shows.

But probably the biggest hidden gem, would be our families. Living close to family makes life better in all ways.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in Glens Falls would be spent with my family on bikes checking out all our favorite spots. Starting with coffee and bagels at Spektor - the Avocado Fresh is so good. We would stop by the Farmer’s Market on a Saturday. After wandering around the Crandall Library, we would take our books to read at Spot and maybe stop into Rude Betty.

Sushi is a family favorite, so Mikado for lunch.

Ice cream is a must at some point - we love Rob & Deb’s or if it’s Sunday in summer, Sprinkles for the jazz concert.

With Grandma babysitting, it would be a quiet dinner at Raul’s. The salmon tacos are my favorite!

On The Future

I’d love to see a boardgame café! We love playing games of all kinds and often pack one when we go out to restaurants. Makes the wait time more enjoyable for everyone! On a vacation to Toronto, we found this great restaurant that offered walls and walls of different board games.

Or maybe a bookstore or Indian food.

Glens Falls Living NY

Thanks, Jacqui! A boardgame café would be so much fun!

My Glens Falls: Christian Weber

This week, we caught up with Christian Weber, who you’ll likely recognize as the co-founder of local favorite Common Roots Brewing Company. While he grew up in the area, we were interested to find out what brought him back to Glens Falls, what he’s up to when he’s not at the brewery, and a pretty cool idea he’d like to see added downtown.

Christian Weber Common Roots Brewing Company

Tell us about yourself!

Hi, I’m Christian Weber and I am the President, Co-Founder, and Head Brewer at Common Roots Brewing Company.

I grew up in Lake George, spending most of my time on the water. After high school I went for Undergrad and Graduate school in NH where I received a BS in Ecology and an MS in Environmental Science. After working at a few breweries I slowly made my way back to this area, via Lake Placid where I was the Executive Director of the Lake Placid Land Conservancy, and I am now happily settled in Glens Falls.

On Life in Glens Falls

I’ve lived in Glens Falls for two years now, and apparently time flies when you’re having fun! I wasn’t sure where I would end up settling down but walkability was important to me, and Glens Falls definitely came through on that. The beautiful downtown, parks, and amenities also drew me in and the short commute over the bridge to the brewery didn’t hurt!

I own an old home near Crandall Park. It was definitely a fixer upper but it has great bones and a lot of character. I love the proximity to the park, Cole’s Woods, and downtown. You really can’t beat the location!

The amenities are what attracted me to Glens Falls. The parks, West Mountain, the vibrant downtown, theaters, access to the bike trail and Feeder Dam trail, and an arena- we really have it all. However, now that I’ve lived here for 2 years I can honestly say the people are my favorite part. The community is what makes Glens Falls such a great place.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

This is tough because we have so many great options.

For breakfast and coffee it’s a toss up between Spot and Spektor. Both are walkable from home and are a great way to start the day.

Although I’m more of a summer guy, one of my favorite activities is being able to get a few runs in at West Mountain after work and still be home for dinner. I’ve lived in a couple more notable ski towns that don’t even have the easy access to a mountain like we do.

For date night, there are so many places that support Common Roots that it’s always hard to choose where to go, but Melanie and I love making the rounds, visiting our friends, and grabbing a beer.

On the Past

Growing up I played hockey and it was always a treat to go to a Red Wings game with my family. I’m happy that hockey is still a part of our town culture today.

On the Future

Although I meant it before when I said Glens Falls really has it all, and Grey Ghost Bicycles has done an incredible job making sure our residents have access to bikes, it would be great to have a bike share program to get around town.

Thanks, Christian! Cheers!

My Glens Falls: Kayla Sehlmeyer

This week, we’re catching up with Kayla Sehlmeyer (who many of you probably know from Yoga Kayla!). Read on to find out where she loves to start her day, the super exciting celebration she’s looking forward to next month (congratulations!!), and what she’d like to see added downtown (we agree!).

My Glens Falls Yoga Kayla

Tell Us About Yourself!

I’m Kayla Sehlmeyer, Owner of Yoga Kayla. I teach breathing for a living :) In all seriousness my love and passion for what I do is deep rooted. I practice wholeheartedly what I teach....

There is great saying about Yoga: "It teaches us to cure what need not to be endured and endure what cannot be cured." B.K. Iyengar

I have two boys Ryan 9 and John 11. I have a beautiful fiance Megan, whom I get to marry in 65 days from today :) Our first date was in City Park right outside the Library :)

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in this area and have been here my entire life. I love love love Glens Falls and the surrounding areas and the Adirondacks. I have been downtown for over 5 years now and to watch this community grow, evolve, and flourish is nothing short of freaking amazing.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

Ahh my ideal day in Glens Falls would be waking up, coffee in hand of course, and heading to one of Sara's early morning classes that we hold outside in the Gazebo during summer months. It's truly amazing to wake up with the city as it wakes up. The birds chirping, the sound of the cars, literally the city slowly moving into its hustle and bustle of the day ahead. I would then head to Spektor Coffee (clearly addicted lol)...grab a book and pop a squat. As the day starts to rise I would venture out for a morning workout at ADK Crossfit, followed by some delicious smoothies at Juicin Jar which I am sure would ensue that I meet up with my future wife and our boys..they love the Juice Monkey... It truly is such a remarkable community downtown. We would then head over to Minky Mink for a little shopping of course and probably an outfit for date night :) We would then head over to Crandall Park for some fishing, playing basketball, and maybe some tennis. After we work up an appetite, we’d grab some lunch at Raul's....mmmm they have some amazing Mexican food. We would take the afternoon biking on the bike path and cruising around. Most definitely the evening would have a date night with my love at Morgan and Co. or Farmacy...such great choices....maybe a little stroll after dinner around the park and end the evening with some star gazing and taking in the city lights.

On the Past

St. Mary's St. Alphonsus is always a memory. It is where I started my education and went there for several years to follow. The roots I have around this community have always made it feel like home...the little Hometown USA....yes indeed that is exactly what it is for me!

On the Future

Grocery Store!!! I would love to have a grocery store within walking distance for downtown businesses and residents to shop at! I would also love a parking garage - preferably where the public parking is right behind the studio or even on Elm St.

Anything else?

SO excited about all the growth and development happening in downtown Glens Falls right now!!!! The new projected farmers market looks amazing!!!!!

GLENS FALLS LIVING

Thanks, Kayla! Wishing you and Megan all the best!! And we totally agree about the grocery store, by the way :)

My Glens Falls: Maury Thompson

This week, we’re chatting with Maury Thompson. For loyal readers of The Post Star, he likely needs no introduction as one of their reporters for 21 years. We were thrilled to learn a bit more about him, including what brought him to Glens Falls, what his perfect Glens Falls day looks like, and what he’s currently working on.

Maury Thompson

Tell us about yourself!

Maury Thompson, freelance writer and documentary film producer specializing in the history of politics, labor organizing and media in New York’s North Country.

I am partnering with Snarky Aardvark Films of Queensbury on a feature-length documentary about Charles Evans Hughes and the Adirondacks. Release is expected in 2020 (see the trailer here).

I have written two books, “The Biggest Kid at the Balloon Festival: The Walter Grishkot Story,” and “The Animated Feather Duster: Slow News Day Tales of the Legendary Facial Hair of Charles Evans Hughes.” Both are available at The Chapman Historical Museum gift shop.

I previously was a reporter for 21 years for The Post-Star.

I covered 12 area congressional races.

On Life in Glens Falls

I came to Glens Falls from Ticonderoga in July 1999 to accept a staff writer position at The Post-Star. I previously had been a freelance correspondent in Essex County for a little over three years.

I originally expected to stay a year to 18 months, but stayed for nearly two decades.

It didn’t take long for Glens Falls to feel like home.

I like to say that in college I majored in English, and in life I majored in Glens Falls.

My wife, Debbie, and I recently moved to Ticonderoga to spend more time with my 12 grandchildren.

But I still major in Glens Falls – writing about its history, people and economic development.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

On a perfect day in Glens Falls I would spend a Thursday afternoon researching at The Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library, catch supper at a downtown restaurant, and then come back to the library for a folk music concert.

On The Past

Trying to pick a favorite memory is like trying to pick a favorite flavor of ice cream at Stewart’s. I will settle for a memory from my first weekend in Glens Falls – attending Adirondack Drums at East Field.

Adirondack Drums was an annual drum and bugle corps show that Fort Edward Lions Club presented at East Field for many years starting in the 1970s.

Many of the top youth music and marching units on the summer circuit stopped in Glens Falls.

Glens Falls Music Academy brought the event back last summer.

…And On the Future

The biggest change in downtown Glens Falls is its vibrancy. When I first moved here in 1999 there was little activity in downtown on evenings and weekends unless there was an event at the Civic Center. On Sunday afternoons I would have to walk across the bridge to South Glens Falls to find a restaurant, other than Burger King, that was open.

The consistency between now, then and a century ago is the community spirit.

My hope for the future is prosperity for all Glens Falls businesses.

Glens Falls Living NY

Thanks, Maury! We couldn’t agree more about the wonderful community spirit here.

My Glens Falls: Christopher Perilli

This week, we’re talking with Patrol Officer Christopher Perilli of the Glens Falls Police Department. We crossed paths with Officer Perilli at Pet Fest last month, and loved getting the chance to meet his K-9 partner, Phlash! Read on to find out what inspired him to become a police officer, a few of his downtown favorites, and a word of advice on dog training.

Glens Falls Police Department K-9 Officer

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Christopher Perilli, Patrol Officer / K-9 Handler with the Glens Falls Police Dept. I live with my girlfriend, 4 dogs and 1 cat.

What inspired you to become a police officer?

Growing up on Long Island when I was young, my twin brother picked the phone up and called 911 and hung up. Two Nassau County police officers came with their lights on and I thought it was the coolest thing.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I enjoy working with my K-9 partner Phlash and being able to demonstrate to people how Phlash works and his capabilities.

Tell us a bit about Phlash!

Phlash is an 8 year old black lab. His birthday is April 21st and his favorite treats are bacon treats. He lives with me along with 3 other dogs.

How long was training to become a K-9? And we must know, any dog training tips?!

Phlash and I went to a K-9 school for 6 months. I’ve always told people that you can get a dog to do anything with dog treats. Just make sure you keep practicing it and when the dog does what you want him to do, make sure you praise him or her and reward them with a treat!

Anything else you’d like to share about Phlash?

I would want people to know that not all police K-9s are mean. A lot of people are afraid of the K-9 but Phlash is a non aggressive detection dog.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in Queensbury mostly, but spent a lot of time in Glens Falls with friends. I’ve been in the Queensbury/Glens Falls area since I was about 8 years old. I would say my favorite thing about Glens Falls is the different restaurants and coffee spots downtown. I especially enjoy Downtown City Tavern, Bullpen Tavern, Mean Max, Mikado and Spot Coffee.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day in the city would be dinner at Downtown City Tavern and catching a hockey game at the CIA or a baseball game at East Field, and then a night cap at the Bullpen Tavern.

On the Past

Pet Fest and Taste of the North Country are always a favorite of mine but I’ve always enjoyed Boo 2 You in the City and handing out candy to the children in their costumes.

…And On the Future

Would love to see more parking spots!

My Glens Falls: Rachael Leigh Rodenmayer

This week, we’re chatting with Rachael Leigh! You’ve probably seen her gorgeous portrait photography on Instagram (we’ve been following along for a few years now!), and we always love running into Rachael and her husband walking their sweet pups around the neighborhood. Read on to find out how she got her start in photography, her favorite spots for rainy day fun, and the fabulous ideas she’d like to see come to life in Glens Falls in the future!

Rachael Leigh Rodenmayer

Tell us about yourself!

Hiya! My name is Rachael Leigh Rodenmayer & I am the owner & artist behind {ser.en.dip.iti} photography & certified aerial yoga instructor at {ser.en.dip.iti} fit. I rebuilt my business headquarters in Upstate NY after moving from my hometown in Colorado almost 12 years ago and have been blessed to create adventures in the #518 and all around the world, from the United Kingdom to Australia!

How did you get your start in photography? What do you love about it?

I absolutely adore photographing people and have since I was a teenager. After interning for a professional photography duo, I began my own business at 18 years of age and over the years, have found my absolute passion photographing custom senior portrait adventures for upcoming high school graduates #serendipitiseniors. I've just begun expanding into lifestyle photography for social media content shoots. Creating with business women in the area with #serendipitisubscribe is so much fun for me.  I love coming along side these awesome entrepreneurs to capture them doing life & building their own passions!

As dog people ourselves, we couldn't let the opportunity to ask about your dogs pass us by! Tell us about them!

You had me at "dog people" and now you wont be able to shut me up about my fur babies ;) My boys are Ace & Booker and they are my world. Ace is a tripawd rescue and Booker is a Bernese Mountain Dog. When I'm not shooting or teaching aerial yoga, you can find us at the dog park or going on an adventure in the woods or lakeside. I love them sooo much & you can find them on insta @brosbookerandace (shameless plug).

On Life in Glens Falls

My best friend i.e. husband and I live in a sweet yellow & white home in the city of Glens Falls and the minute we set foot in it we both looked at each other and said "this is it!"

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My absolute favorite places in Glens Falls:

Walking our fur babies: Crandall Park

Fashion & Beauty: Beauty Bubble - from affordable fashion trends, accessories & gifts to facials & eyelash tinting

Smoothies & Healthy Fare: Juicin Jar is where it's at, also their fresh guacamole is my favorite!

Date night: [farmacy] just blew our minds...you gotta try it!

Coffee in a cool atmosphere: Spektor Coffee Roasters is always top notch!

Rainy day fun: The Hyde Collection and Crandall Library

For sushi & thai (my favorite food on the planet): Aroydee - try the black & white roll or the pad thai or mango curry!

On the Past

Downtown charm at its finest, my earliest glimpse was after eating dinner out with Wade one summer night. As we began to walk home, we heard lively jazz music streaming from the city park and realized that a Big Band was playing live in the gazebo in the moonlight, we wandered over and danced to a couple songs under the starry sky & sparkle lights. I remember thinking "we've moved to Stars Hollow!"

…And On the Future

I would love to see a dueling piano bar, a dog bark & brew (indoor/outdoor dog park bar) & a natural grocery store like healthy living!

Glens Falls NY Living

Thanks so much, Rachael! We’re totally on board with that bark and brew idea!!

My Glens Falls: Amanda Blanton

This week, we’re catching up with Amanda Blanton! We’ve been fortunate to know her through her hard work at The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce and her weekly radio show! Read on to find out what brought her to Glens Falls, her go-to breakfast spot, and the three things she’d love to see in Glens Falls in the future (we totally agree!).

Amanda Blanton

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Amanda Blanton and I am the Marketing & Communications Manager for the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce. I am a proud auntie to my niece, and cat momma to the most handsome orange cat on the planet, named Fry. I enjoy cooking, traveling, a good book and good company. I make a pretty good margarita. Oh, and I hate winter.

On Life in Glens Falls

I have lived in this region for almost 10 years. Before packing up a truck and moving to Upstate New York I lived in San Antonio, Texas for 13 years. Being in a military family took me all over the world, but there is something special about Upstate New York. Not only do I have family living here but there is a great sense of community, which you cannot find everywhere. When deciding where to move, this seemed like the obvious choice.

Home ownership is something I hope to achieve one day, but renting has its perks too. I work in downtown Glens Falls and my commute is 11 minutes. Life is good!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Although I have only lived here for 10 years, I have been visiting Glens Falls many years before that. My sister and I spent a few summers exploring Glens Falls/Queensbury/Lake George, when we visited family. I believe that gives me an interesting perspective of the region as I got to watch it change over the years. This may sound dorky, but I absolutely LOVE Crandall Public Library. It is such a beautiful building and a great resource for the community. I also enjoy walking around downtown as there always seems to be something new to see or check out.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I am absolutely obsessed with the breakfast bowl at Rachel's Cafe & Spice Co. on Warren Street. I never knew sweet potatoes could be incorporated into breakfast! If you haven't been to Mikado, since they moved to Glen Street, you have to go. Not only is it gorgeous inside, but they have these awesome sushi boxes that are perfect for lunch. The best thing about downtown is everything is within walking distance and there's a little bit of everything. I could get a craft beer and Buffalo chicken soup at Davidson Brothers, then hop over to the Bullpen Tavern for their grilled cheese of the week. Too many choices!

 On the Future

I saw that someone else said a bookstore would be a great addition, and I totally agree. What else? A rooftop bar somewhere would be awesome. And I know space may be a little limited, but a small dog park would make a lot of people (and furry friends) happy.

Glens Falls NY - Glens Falls Living

Thanks, Amanda! We’re rooting for that rooftop bar, too!

My Glens Falls: Michael Murray

This week, we’re chatting with Michael Murray. We met Michael downtown last summer, and ended up chatting about cars, road trips, and all the reasons we love Glens Falls. Another example of what is great about our little city - you’re just one conversation away from learning something new. Read on to find out where he’s from, what brought him to Glens Falls, and why he’s decided to stick around.

My Glens Falls - Michael Murray

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Michael Murray and I work for an amazing architecture firm right here in Glens Falls. My responsibilities are varied at AJA Architecture, but my main goal is to introduce new clients to our firm so they can know more about the great work that we do as designers for local, regional, and international design projects.

On Life in Glens Falls

I’m not originally from Glens Falls, but every time I’ve visited, I’ve found another reason to like it here – and last year I decided to move here and so now I’m a “local”!

I grew up in southern Connecticut but moved out west in my late 20’s and lived in Boulder Colorado for several years. I first became familiar with Glens Falls about 10-years ago while visiting friends here in town. Whenever I’d come to visit, their family would always be active doing things in town and so my visits with them over the years always gave me a very good glimpse of what Glens Falls and the surrounding area was all about. I remember going to the Balloon Festival with them, boating on Lake George, going to a drive-in movie, taking in the scenery on several different hikes, going to hockey games at the Cool Insuring Arena, and of course, lots of dinners out and lots of laughs in the local restaurants and pubs. We also took a few road-trips to Albany, Saratoga Springs, Lake Placid, and other areas of the Adirondacks. With each of my visits I discovered something new that I liked and appreciated about the area. And I especially liked the “small-town” feel of Glens Falls.

I started visiting Glens Falls a bit more frequently a few years ago after I left Colorado and moved back to my hometown of Greenwich Connecticut. My move from Colorado was on the same day my friend, Andy Allison, started his own architecture firm in Glens Falls – AJA Architecture and Planning. That moving-day was an exciting day for me for two reasons; I was excited to be back on the east coast again after being out west for so many years, and I was excited to hear about Andy starting his own firm. I began helping AJA early on with some marketing strategies which gave me a good excuse to drive up to Glens Falls more often. As the firm grew, so did my involvement. At the time, I was working with AJA as a consultant out of my home-office in Connecticut, but as AJA’s client-base increased, so did my 3-hour drives to the office. And so after a few years of up-and-back drives from Greenwich to Glens Falls, I began working for AJA full-time and decided to relocate here. I’ve only been living here a year but with all my visits over the years, I already feel like a “local”.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

What I like most about Glens Falls is the people and the more relaxed pace compared to living an hour outside of NYC. The people of Glens Falls seem to be very down-to-earth and genuinely friendly. And now that I live up here, I regularly see people in town that I’ve met at an event, or at the local YMCA, or at one of the coffee shops, and it’s always a good opportunity to stop and say ‘hi’ and catch-up. It’s just great to be in a small town where community is important.

I’ve discovered countless great hikes, bike rides, and snowshoeing around town. Cole’s Wood is a great place for nighttime cross country skiing, Gurney Lane has some of the best single-track mountain bike trails I’ve ever done, and the Rush Pond Trail is one the area’s best-kept secrets for both biking and hiking. And last summer I learned about the rail-trail that goes all the way to Lake George. Another favorite of mine is West Mountain. It’s really amazing to have such a fun ski area right here in town. And in the summer being on a boat in nearby Lake George is such a great way to spend the day. The lake is so beautiful. There’s really so much to do in and around Glens Falls that the list is too long to name. And that’s not even mentioning anything about the wonders found further north in the Adirondack Park – Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid, Gore Mountain, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and so much more. I think it’s great that all these towns and all that they have to offer in the winter and in the summer, are just a couple of hours of relaxed scenic driving to the north.

 A Perfect Glens Falls Day

Before I moved to Glens Falls, I would typically stay at the Queensbury Hotel when I visited, and so I’m very familiar with all the great restaurants and pubs in the downtown area. I’ve frequented nearly all of them and I like them all – Morgan and Co for their amazing food and expertly made martinis, Downtown City Tavern for their lunch and good selection of brews, Rock Hill Bake House (now “The Exchange”) for their awesome sandwiches and fresh breads, Davidson Brothers for their outdoor seating, the Bullpen Tavern for when the game is on, and of course, Raul’s Mexican Grill for locally sourced Mexican food (and the best margaritas in town!). I also like that Glens Falls has a variety of coffee shops. I like them all, but I think SPoT Coffee is my favorite (with Spektor Roasters being a close second). SPoT Coffee is a very social spot and a good place to chill on a Sunday morning, especially when the weather allows for the large window-wall to be open.

On the Future

It’s great that there are some new restaurants in Glens Falls, which to me, shows that this area is improving. The new Downtown Social has a great menu and was designed thoughtfully and elegantly. It has an upscale feel to it, without feeling pretentious. It’s got a really great atmosphere. Mikado’s new location also offers a very upscale look, while keeping its local flavor and fun hibachi tables. I haven’t been to the [farmacy] restobar yet, but I’ve heard some great reviews and so I’m looking forward to checking it out. And soon Craft On Nine will be moving to South Street, which I know will be as popular as their current location in Fort Edward.

I’ve seen lots of improvements in Glens Falls over the past few years and I believe there’s more to come without altering much of the personality of the town as we all know it today. The newly renovated Park Theater is a good example of how a run-down building can come back to life and be something special for Glens Falls. My hope is that more of the local retail stores will thrive, which I know is an on-going issue with any small retail shop. But with the new restaurants coming in, new apartments recently built, and a new parking structure soon to be built, I believe we’ll all see some nice improvements to Glens Falls soon and in the coming years.

Thanks, Michael! We agree - great things to come!

My Glens Falls: Sidney Scacchetti & Steven Brodt

This week, we’re excited to get to know Sidney Scacchetti and Steven Brodt! We discovered their Instagram account recently, and it was great to finally meet the couple behind the photos. Scroll on to see their sweet pup Luna, read about their perfect summer Saturday, and hear about their (multiple) businesses!

Glens Falls NY - Glens Falls Living

Tell us about yourselves!

Our names are Sidney Scacchetti and Steven Brodt, we created and run the @historic.homes Instagram page, an account dedicated to showcasing historic homes, buildings and architecture in the area. Aside from that, we also own and operate a non-profit paranormal investigation organization, The South Glens Falls Paranormal Society. In addition, we also recently just launched our new marketing business, Be Social Marketing. When we have a free moment to ourselves, you'll find us sitting on the porch of our 109 year old home lounging with our rescue pup, Luna (@pit_luna_bull).

On Life in Glens Falls

We both grew up just over the bridge in South Glens Falls. After moving away, we didn't think we would permanently return to the area, but that wasn’t the case. We soon found ourselves back in NY State, but this time a little further south. We rented in the historic district of Schenectady while finishing school. Upon graduation, we bought our first home right in Glens Falls! Our house was built in 1910, complete with all original wood work and old charm. We were/are excited to restore our home to its original beauty all while making it ours! We enjoy living within walking distance to downtown, making it easy to frequent all of the near by restaurants.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

We enjoy all of the festivals and activities that Glens Falls has to offer - there is always something going on. In the warmer months we like to take Luna to Rob & Debs Frozen Dreams for a doggie dish, peruse the booths at LARAC and stop into Juicin' Jar (who are dog friendly) for a delicious gluten free snack. Being located just 15 minutes south of Lake George allows us to take a short drive for a hike or a stroll along the shores.

Glens Falls has plenty to do in the long cold winter months as well. We enjoy stopping into Spektor Coffee for breakfast and a couple caramel bulletproof lattes! Our favorite winter activity has to be supporting the local ECHL team, the Adirondack Thunder. The Thunder games are always a great way to spend a night with friends. Having the Cool Insuring Arena right on the edge of downtown brings big crowds and helps support many of the local businesses with pre and post game drinks and food.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect day in GF would be hitting up the Farmers’ Market on a Saturday morning, followed by a reality class in downtown with our PAWS family (North Country Paws for Obedience). For lunch, sitting outside (so Luna can join) at our favorite restaurant, Gourmet Café, where they have an extensive gluten free menu, and the staff knows our order before we even sit down. Next, a trip to Spot Coffee for their amazing lavender lemonade! We also like to head over to Crandall Park for a round of tug and a game of frisbee with Luna. Sometimes, while I’m busy taking pictures of old homes, Sidney sneaks away for some shopping and pampering at Beauty Bubble. For dinner we would head over to Siam Thai and grab some fresh sushi and a drink! Being able to walk to all of our favorite spots gives me plenty of chances to take pictures of all the historic homes in Glens Falls.

ON THE PAST

The city of Glens Falls has lost a number of historic buildings over the years due to large fires and modernization. However, we are glad to see that the mind set of the area has changed from tearing down and rebuilding to restoring and revitalizing these historic structures. The homes surrounding the downtown area are historic which lends itself to the Glens Falls of the past. Being able to live in a home that has seen Glens Falls evolve for the last century helps give the city its cozy, charming vibe.

 …AND ON THE FUTURE

We are excited to announce the launch of our new business, Be Social Marketing, a marketing agency focused on small business and bringing the community together. The start of this new journey is very exciting for us and we are very eager to help the business in the area prosper!

We look forward to the opening of the year round indoor farmers market, the new parking garage that will accompany it, and all of the new business that will be popping up. We can't wait to see the historic buildings of Glens Falls get a second chance with all of the ongoing restorations in downtown.

Thanks Steven and Sidney! We’ll have to have you back again to chat more about the Paranormal Society - Tom is SO intrigued!
